With how crowded the cloud-based gaming market is getting with the likes of Microsoft’s xCloud, Nvidia GeForce Now, and Amazon Luna, Google Stadia will have to grow if it wants to avoid falling behind. To that end, Google has announced that Stadia has done just that with an expansion in eight more countries across Europe.
Starting today, Stadia is going live in Austria, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia and Switzerland, which brings the total number of countries where the service is available to 22. Google notes that the rollout will take around 24 hours to complete, so anyone interested in jumping in might have to wait a little depending on where they live.
The company also notes that anyone in these countries with a Gmail account (and a sufficient internet signal) can sign up to receive free access to Destiny 2 and Super Bomberman R Online. Stadia Pro memberships are also available for €9.99 a month, following a free first month, and will provide access to a growing number of high-profile titles, including this week’s big launch, Cyberpunk 2077.
Google recently announced that it would soon begin rolling out a browser-based version of Stadia on iOS, sidestepping the regulations that have kept game-streaming services from being released on the App Store. Combined with today’s expansion, these are decent steps towards making Stadia more attractive to gamers following its lukewarm launch last year. That said, only time will tell if that will be enough to keep the platform competitive at this rate, with the increased competition it has nowadays.
