Ubisoft has a stable of fan favorite franchises, though more than a few appear to have been left behind in some fashion. In addition to Splinter Cell, the other major franchise Ubisoft tends to hear about from fans is Prince of Persia. While the company revealed a remake of Prince of Persia: Sands of Time earlier this year, fans continued to wonder if a proper new game was in the works. According to a brand new rumor, it appears that Ubisoft has big plans for the long-running Prince of Persia franchise.
The latest news comes from the YouTuber Lazy Assassin, the same individual who ultimately tipped off everyone to the Prince of Persia Sands of Time Remake prior to it being announced by Ubisoft. Regardless of their track record, this is still an unverified rumor so fans should take the information with a grain of salt for now. With a supposed release window of a few years from now, it’s possible fans don’t get confirmation of this potential game for a while either.

Lazy Assassin indicates that in addition to the Sands of Time remake coming early in 2021, Ubisoft is also working on a completely new game in the franchise. Instead of following the Sands of Time trilogy or the one from the 2007 Prince of Persia storyline, this new game will completely reboot the franchise. Unfortunately, not much else was said about the reboot, though Lazy Assassin expects a release sometime in 2023 or 2024.
Prior to Assassin’s Creed, Prince of Persia reigned as one of Ubisoft’s most reliable franchises as it not only featured a fan favorite trilogy in the early 2000s as well as an off shoot in 2007, but its popularity also caused a live-action film to be made in 2010 with Jake Gyllenhaal staring as the Prince. While that movie may not have been a massive hit with fans or critics, it still went on to become incredibly successful and earned the honor of being the highest-grossing video game film until it was beaten out in 2016 by Warcraft. Unfortunately, a tie-in game called The Forgotten Sands was met with mixed reviews and was ultimately the last major game released in the franchise.
Thankfully, fan excitement appears to be at an all time high thanks in large part to the upcoming Sands of Time Remake. While the game suffered a bit of a PR crisis after it was first revealed, things appeared to have stabilized since. Leaked images prior to the announcement appeared to show character models and environments that lacked polish and detail. When compared to other current remakes, such as Resident Evil 2, the difference was night and day. Thankfully, more recent images provided by Ubisoft show the game running in a newer build including better lighting, color saturation, and detailing. With the January 2021 release date approaching, fans should expect to see more soon.
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake is set to release on January 21, 2021, for the PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
