Since the releases of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Call of Duty: Warzone, a lot has changed. Each game is a much different experience from graphical upgrades, new operators, and exciting events than when it first started. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare launched with a tone of gritty realism and tactical combat, but since then has evolved into a much more relaxed and fun-loving experience.
While neither game is perfect, there is a large community supporting both Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Call of Duty: Warzone. Due to the sheer popularity of the titles, it is nice to look back upon some of the changes that helped reinforce fan faith in the developer’s evolving game experience.
When Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Call of Duty: Warzone launched, the bundles were designed with a serious tone. From mimicking real-world operations to bringing back classic Modern Warfare skins, many players could add minor cosmetics that still matched the feel of a realistic war simulation. Since then, several bundles have been added to the game, but these bundles have evolved the customization past realism and instead added a level of fun and pop-culture to its design.
The two biggest Call of Duty: Modern Warfare bundles that stress this change are the Kawaii Mara set and the obviously Tiger King styled set. These two bundles quickly gained fan attention during their initial launch, making many players both exceedingly happy. Adding bright pink Anime style cosmetics created an instant rush in the community, while the Tiger King set showed that the game’s developers were in tune with the outside world of pop culture.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare’s Ground War was met with some criticism at the beginning. Fans saw that the game mode included vehicles, large scale combat, and a familiar tactical formula that made many players concerned that the game was developing towards a Battlefield design. While the design may have stayed the same, the game added several new maps that improved the tactical formula and helped fans fall in love with this new gameplay style.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare expanded its Ground War maps by adding familiar locations from Warzone. While many fans have already battled through each location, adding a Ground War feel gave players a more defined look. Some players saw this as a chance to learn more about the maps, while others took this as an opportunity to redefine their loadouts and take on new challenges in each varying location.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare’s Ground War was not the only game mode to receive bonus maps. The now fan-favorite Gunfight mode gained extra popularity as fans were offered new maps and variations upon the core concept. From changing the gun selection to adjusting from 3v3 to 2v2 rotations, the developers have been able to keep Gunfights fresh and new for all fans throughout each update.
While Call of Duty: Modern Warfare was already successful with the core Gunsmith system, the developer decided to take weapon customization to a whole new level. When Infinity Ward introduced Gunsmith Customs to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Call of Duty: Warzone players, it changed the playing field of what is possible in weapon customizations.
This new feature was easily stressed by the extra emphasis that both games placed on weapon blueprints. As more blueprints were added to both Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Warzone, players initially had to select between their builds and the blueprints. With Gunsmith Customs, players gained the ability to break down blueprint specific parts and create custom guns out of all their collected variants.
While Call of Duty: Modern Warfare has had several maps return from previous games, Shipment is one that fans were particularly excited to see. The close-quarters combat, mixed with high-speed action, gives the map a unique tone not found in other Modern Warfare experiences. While this map has had a mixed reception in past titles, fans flooded to it once the map appeared in a combined playlist known as Shoot the Ship 24/7. Since the initial launch of this playlist, fans have repeatedly requested its return as Shipment acted as a perfect opportunity for fast-paced gun progression.
When Call of Duty: Warzone initially launched, fans explored every corner of the map. While most buildings could be entered and interacted with, the most prominent facility on the horizon remained locked to players. The Stadium stood as an impenetrable fortress that drew fan attention almost immediately. From using Call of Duty: Warzone Stadium glitches to get inside to false rumors for several seasons that the doors would finally open, players were obsessed with the building. Upon Season 5’s launch, the roof of Warzone’s Stadium was smashed open, and players finally got a look inside the massive structure.
Scattered across the wide world of Verdansk is the infamous Call of Duty: Warzone bunkers. These massive metal doors became the topic of fan speculation after being added mysteriously during Season 3. For several months fans investigated Easter eggs, glitches, and exploits in attempts to open the iron-bound doors. Infinity Ward eventually added in Red Key Cards in Season 5, making the treasure-filled locales easily accessible to any lucky fan who found one. Once inside, players could loot legendary crates for extra gear and reinforce their already lethal loadouts.
Call of Duty: Warzone fans long suspected that trains would eventually appear in the game. From the silent train station to the tracks covering Verdansk, many players considered it only a matter of time before the trains would be added to the game. Upon the launch of Season 5, players got access to a large moving Warzone train that carried loot across the land. This massive wandering behemoth has several legendary crates that any lucky players could loot if they happen to be the first onto its many carts. Initially, the train was absolute chaos, but as time progressed, it quickly became a staple drop location for Call of Duty: Warzone fans.
If one train was not enough, Season 6 added in an entire Subway system. This underground network added the first instance of fast-travel to the Call of Duty: Warzone experience. Players could simply jump in the subway in one place and appear in a completely different zone. While the subway has its own trials and problems, the community all agree that it is by far the fastest way to travel the map.
Infinity Ward has slowly experimented with the game mode over several amazing events. Recently, the Call of Duty: Warzone Halloween event impressed fans with its spooky redecoration and zombie-filled excitement. The Halloween event’s success has inspired a recent movement for a Christmas themed map, but so far, there has been no reply from the developers.
Halloween is not the only game mode to excite fans as Warzone has been the home to Juggernaut Royales, 200 Player Matches, Cold War promotions, and even an Armored Truck event. Each of these game modes reinvents the Call of Duty: Warzone experience and brings something new to the table for fans to enjoy for a limited time.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Call of Duty: Warzone include a ton of cosmetic personalization, but one small feature is both loved and questioned by fans. The addition of a wristwatch seemed almost natural as players can clearly see the operator’s wrist during in-game missions. With tons of varying options, players can choose a watch that matches their personal preferences and needs. While some of the in-game watches match the console/system clock, others can do much more than tell time. Digital pets, in-game maps, and even a 3D projection Modern Warfare watch have all been watch styles that fans use and enjoy in their everyday loadouts.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is available now.
