Cyberpunk 2077‘s combat has been a point of contention for a while now. Viewers of gameplay previews released for the title so far have more or less judged the game’s combat to look clunky, with clumsy animations. Cyberpunk 2077 is one of the most anticipated game of the year, so it’s understandable that perceived issues with the game’s combat have caused some concern about its overall quality.
Now that Cyberpunk 2077 is less than a week away from releasing, more videos of its gameplay have started leaking online. As a result, the debate over whether the title’s combat is bad and whether that’s indicative of the experience it provides as a whole has stirred up again. For example, a Twitter user going by the handle ClunkSpider posted a minute of Cyberpunk 2077‘s katana combat, asking fans of the upcoming title if they really think Cyberpunk 2077 deserves to be a game of the year choice. Essentially, it shows the first-person combat from the player’s perspective as they engage in combat with some form of cyber dummy, with the player best described as “whacking” them with the Katana, even after the dummy goes down. The video in ClunkSpider’s post, as well as others, have since been taken down by CD Projekt Red.
Those unfazed by the game’s combat argue those judging it on the previews released so far are doing so before Cyberpunk 2077’s day-one patch, while those against the game argue it shouldn’t need a day one patch for presentable combat to begin with. Those arguing in favor of the game also claim its combat experience isn’t everything, while those against it believe that will be the meat of the game’s experience as an action RPG.
Regardless of either side’s opinion, judging a game before the public gets hands-on experience with its final version is typically not the most reliable. CD Projekt Red has also addressed the debate, stating that the Cyberpunk 2077 gameplay videos so far only shows off what V, Cyberpunk 2077’s protagonist, can do at a low level. How much it changes by release remains to be seen.
It’s also important to remember that gameplay videos for the title date back years now. They may display gameplay from older and outdated builds that CD Projekt Red has since moved on from. Beyond all of that, gameplay is fixable with patches in this day and age. Not to mention, no one has to get the game the day it launches if they don’t want. Anyone serious about knowing if the game is worth their money can wait to see how it performs and adapts.
Cyberpunk 2077 launches December 10 for PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One, with PS5 and Xbox Series X versions also in development.
