Detroit: Become Human invites players into the future when androids are nearly indistinguishable from humans. Existing exclusively for servitude, they replace people in countless jobs from cashiering to babysitting. While many benefit from their existence, others are left jobless and angry. Humans are not the only ones questioning their treatment. Some androids – nicknamed “deviants” – see more than a life of slavery in their futures.
Played from the unique point of view of three, separate androids, players control the story based on individual dialogue and action choices. The complex storyline challenges morals and explores the fascinating future of artificial intelligence. The game has over 30 potential endings and dozens of unique story path choices, providing players with hours of entertainment. There are plenty of movies to watch for fans that find themselves wanting more.
10 Westworld (1973)
Westworld got its start much earlier than HBO. Before it inspired a hit series, it was a movie written and directed by Michel Crichton. Guests taste all of the pleasures and the thrills of life in the Old West at a futuristic theme park – that is, if they pay a hefty price. When a human is killed in a duel gone wrong, dark possibilities arise, and the park as they know it will never be the same.
9 Blade Runner (1982)
This science-fiction classic directed by Ridley Scott and starring Harrison Ford takes audiences into a technologically advanced future. After a mutiny, human-like robots called “replicants” are now illegal.
A hunter named Deckard – also known as a blade runner – must chase down four rogues living among humans on earth. What he finds makes him question everything he’s ever believed to be true.
8 A.I. Artificial Intelligence (2001)
Steven Spielberg directs Jude Law and Haley Joel Osment in this heartfelt, sci-fi retelling of Pinocchio. Longing for a home, an advanced android named David searches for his place in the world. AI: Artificial Intelligence is surprisingly similar to Detroit: Become Human in its fantastical exploration of topics such as an android’s ability to love, and his desire to be recognized as a real human being.
7 I, Robot (2004)
I, Robot takes on a story fairly reminiscent of the storyline between Connor and Hank in this Will Smith sci-fi action thriller. A technophobic detective has more contact than he wants to with a robot named Sonny while investigating the supposed suicide of the genius behind his invention.
Detective Spooner must challenge his own prejudices as the mystery unravels into a dangerous conspiracy.
6 Surrogates (2009)
Imagine a world with no pain, no shame, and no health concerns. Everyone looks exactly how they always wished they looked. It is finally possible to live out the lives of their dreams by uploading their consciousness into robot “surrogates.” Since their invention, crime has gone down, until the first murder in years sends an FBI agent on an investigation that may change their utopian world as they know it.
5 Her (2013)
Many movies centering around artificial intelligence focus on action or horror, but Her takes a decidedly different route with a quiet, introspective love story. Mid-divorce, a lonely writer develops a relationship with an artificially intelligent computer system in this award-winning romance. Her received five Academy Award nominations and won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay.
4 Ex Machina (2014)
Ex Machina explores the horrors and wonders of artificial intelligence in this sci-fi thriller written and directed by Alex Garland.
A narcissistic genius of artificial intelligence, determined to prove that his AI can pass the famed Turing Test, sets up a dark experiment with an unsuspecting test subject. What he doesn’t suspect, is that Ava may be more self-aware than he ever imagined.
3 Chappie (2015)
Written and directed by Neil Blomkamp, Chappie is a heartwarming look into android sentience. An expert programmer develops a chip that allows a damaged police robot to think and feel. Kidnapped by criminals that raise him as their “child,” he innocently latches on to their life of crime. All goes well until authorities begin to see him and others like him as a threat to law and order.
2 Blade Runner 2049 (2017)
Denis Villeneuve directs this beautiful science-fiction sequel to its 1982 predecessor. 30 years after Deckard’s disappearance, a young hunter named “K” finds himself on a quest to find the former blade runner. Starring Ryan Gosling, Blade Runner 2049 also sees the return of famous replicant hunter, Rick Deckard, in a role reprised by Harrison Ford.
1 Upgrade (2018)
A tragic incident leaves his wife dead and Grey a quadriplegic. After falling into an intense depression, he is only able to regain his will to live when he realizes that his wife’s death might not have been an accident. Grey’s only hope of finding the killer is to upgrade. An experimental computer chip will restore his ability to walk and allow him to search for his wife’s killers, but at what cost?
