Ben Schwartz and Ayo Edebiri Starring in Animated Netflix Special

2020 seems like a good year for animated specials. Everybody can work from home and there’s no dress code. Netflix has apparently realized this with its new special, We Lost Our Human, a 2D interactive story starring Ben Schwartz of Parks and Recreation fame and Ayo Edebiri, who recently joined the cast of Netflix’s Big Mouth.

We Lost Our Human follows a cat (Schwartz) and dog (Edebiri) who wake up one day to find their human has disappeared, along with all the other humans. The two pets promptly panic and begin a desperate search through new and unusual places. Anyone with a dog will attest to the fact that their furry friend will freak out and assume the world is over if they don’t see their human for 5 seconds. Meanwhile, anyone with a cat may be confused about the idea.

The audience will assume the perspective of one of the two animals as they venture out into this strange new world in search of answers, and the choices made will help them navigate through an adventure of increasingly fascinating mysteries and unusual creatures. The interactive elements will likely be similar to those of past Netflix endeavors such as Carmen Sandiego: To Steal or Not to Steal and Puss in Book: Trapped in an Epic Tale.

We Lost Our Human comes from the creative minds of Rikke Asbjoern and Chris Garbutt, who also created the Nickelodeon and Netflix animated series Pinky Malinky (which also notably featured Schwartz as Coach Freebird). Those familiar with the show’s art style should feel right at home with Netflix’s new interactive special. Other cast members include Adrienne C. Moore, Lauren Tom, Jon Glaser, Henry Rollins, Lucas Grabeel, and Matty Cardarople, several of whom also hailed from Pinky Malinky.

This special is sure to be a fun little distraction for kids, families, and anyone else who’s interested. Netflix has proven the choose-your-own-adventure gimmick can be more than just a novelty with its growing collection of similar picks, as well as the well-received Black Mirror: Bandersnatch episode. So hopefully this is no different, though perhaps not quite as horror-centric. That would be an interesting combination, to say the least.

Netflix has yet to announce a premiere date for this new story, but hopefully, audiences won’t have to wait long before taking the driver’s seat in this tale of loss, humor, and probably a bit of panic. Ok, probably a lot of panic. It does star a dog and cat, after all.
