After revealing Beyond Light earlier this year, Bungie has continued remind Destiny 2 players that this expansion serves as a new beginning for the long running franchise. Beyond Light not only introduced new content in terms of the destination Europa as well as three brand new darkness-based subclasses, but it also brought substantial changes to the core experience. The Destiny Content Vault removed a sizable chunk of content from the game including sunsetting a huge portion of weapons and gear. However, even more changes are on the horizon as Bungie teases upcoming content in 2021 and beyond.
Joe Blackburn, a former Bungie alum who has recently rejoined the company as Assistant Game Director in Destiny 2, gave fans a lengthy update as to what the team is working on and analyzing certain elements in Season of the Hunt that maybe didn’t go so well. Naturally, the topic of weapon sunsetting came up, with Blackburn acknowledging that the studio went a bit too far with taking weapons away and not supplying players with a large initial reward pool in Beyond Light. Thankfully, Bungie has addressed this in a past update and based on Blackburn’s comments, players shouldn’t expect an incident like this again.
In addition to the Power Ecosystem, Blackburn also provides a few updates on some highly requested features like Armor Transmogrification, which the team is aiming to have in place by Season 14. While the bulk of the team is set to enjoy a holiday break, the studio also has a number of potentially exciting features and mechanics in development that are on track to arrive as early as next season.
While Blackburn didn’t provide a ton of details, he did tease a number of them towards the bottom of the post. From a security standpoint, Bungie will be adding in DDoS protection for all Destiny 2 console players, which aims to prevent distributed denial-of-service attacks which cause server related issues for online games. Content-wise, two classic Destiny strikes, Fallen S.A.B.E.R. and Devil’s Lair are returning alongside the Vault of Glass raid as well as the Legendary and Master Lost Sector rotation to include the Moon. Better yet, these new locations will also be home to three pieces of exotic armor, similar to what players can currently do on Europa.
Crossplay is another major topic for Destiny 2 and thankfully, it appears to be a feature that interests Bungie as well. Earlier in November, Bungie confirmed that it was looking into Crossplay, a mechanic that essentially allows players to team up with anyone across any Destiny 2 platform. Over a month later, it appears that Crossplay is a feature that is finally going to make it into the game, with Blackburn’s post indicating a 2021 release. It’s possible this could be a major feature as part of the upcoming Witch Queen expansion, similar to how Crosssave was added alongside the Shadowkeep expansion in 2019.
Destiny 2 is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
