The Disney rumor mill has been spinning steadily for the past few weeks, as previous reports have suggested the studio is already planning new projects for several of its prized media properties. Any future productions would add up to Disney’s enviable delayed movie lineup that will surely keep things interesting in 2021.
Up to this point Disney has avoided taking the same course as Warner Bros. for their biggest films, despite the studio having its own streaming service ready to test any similar business strategies without having to share profits with other parties. So far, the only films rumored to be planned as Disney+ releases are Cruella, as well as the upcoming Pinocchio and Peter Pan & Wendy.
However, all that speculation could come to an end soon enough, as the company is set to hold its virtual “Disney Investor Day 2020” on December 10. As Deadline reports, the annual shareholders meeting would not only specify which films are set for streaming premieres, but also announce new Marvel, Lucasfilm and Pixar projects split across Disney+ and cinemas.
While it’s unclear exactly which production could surface after this event, a couple of likely candidates are certainly on the cards, chief among them a possible Boba Fett spin-off to follow up The Mandalorian’s success and a female-led Star Wars series in the far away galaxy. As far as Marvel goes, any plans would probably have to wait until 2022, since 2021 is already quite busy with The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Loki, Hawkeye, Moon Knight and She-Hulk.
In any scenario Disney’s shareholder’s briefing is something many may look forward to for other reasons, for example, on that day the company will share the results of its streaming release for Mulan, for which it has yet to disclose any concrete numbers. At the same time it will probably address how Disney plans to counter -if at all- Warner’s 2021 strategy.
For the time being, Disney’s decision to wait out the pandemic until 2021 has been seen as a way to ensure max profits on blockbusters like Black Widow and Raya and the Last Dragon, but also as a gesture to not abandon ailing movie theaters in North America. Yet, the possibility of adding more attractive content that would bolster Disney+ as a content platform might be too strong to resist.
