Sony PlayStation shocked the world when they unveiled the design for the newest PlayStation 5 controller. There is only one DualSense design to choose from, but this is subject to change in the future. Perhaps a one-toned design will work with successors or a different palette altogether.
Controller-based speakers haven’t worked as well in the past, yet DualSense has brought the feature to new heights with unprecedented realism. It’s a controller that needs to be experienced first-hand as anecdotes are not nearly enough. The DualSense has a bold, innovative design that is awe-inspiring. Which features came out on top?
10 The Create Button
The ability to share an in-game moment with friends opens up a world of possibilities. This time around, the Create button has replaced the PlayStation 4’s Share button. Simply press the controller’s Create button and select Take Screenshot to take a 4K screenshot. The Share button’s renaming doesn’t come as a surprise since the Create button introduces new features. You can preview screenshots before taking them, capture video clips, and broadcast gameplay.
9 USB Type-C Port
The bright minds at Sony PlayStation are continually pushing innovation. One of the latest DualSense features is the highly anticipated USB-C. USB-C is the new standard for charging and data transfers. According to businessinsider.com, “A USB-C connection can charge devices up to 20 times faster than basic USB. USB-C ports support USB Power Delivery, a fast-charging standard that can deliver 100 watts of power to compatible devices.”
8 Size And Weight
In comparison to its predecessor, the DualShock 4, the new DualSense controller is beefier in size and weight. The controller is more sophisticated than its single-toned cousin, yet it is a welcomed change for many. Whether the controller’s size is too big or small depends on the size of its user’s hands. So far, the controller feels more sturdy in hands, leaving us to believe this is one of the best aspects of the DualSense.
7 Textured Grip
Texture grip on a video game controller is becoming the new standard. Now that Xbox and PlayStation are using the textured grip on the forefront of their product line, people less have to deal with the controller falling from their hands.
The first thing to notice about the DualSense is the material of the controller. It’s much more textured than any first-party video game controller seen thus far.
6 Lightbar
In total, there are four LEDs below the lightbar used to indicate which controller you are. It doesn’t stop there because the lightbar can also glow blue, red, green, and purple. When playing a game like Red Dead Redemption 2, you instantly notice the light bar turn red. This color changes depending on the part of the game. It’s a small nuance, but that won’t prevent many from going wild over this gameplay enhancing feature.
5 Microphone
The PlayStation 5’s DualSense controller comes with a built-in microphone. The convenience of having a microphone built-in to a controller, instead of having to purchase one separately, is incredible. Of course, with so many features, the DualSense controller is PlayStation’s most expensive thus far. By pressing the microphone button, players can mute or unmute their mic when they want to chime in for a chat. Interestingly enough, your voice is recorded during Trophy Videos unless you press the mute button.
4 Design
One aspect that stands out on the DualSense is the overall design of the controller. Screenshots do not do this controller justice. Playing with the controller for several hours, it’s hard not to fall in love with its elegant design. The two-toned color approach to this controller could’ve been met with bad feedback. Whether you like the design or not, it’s hard to pick apart the amount of polish that went into its design.
3 Internal Speaker
In the audio department, Sony PlayStation has got you covered. With a built-in speaker, players can uncannily get into the moment. DualSense delivers crisp audio from its internal speaker.
Nintendo was the first major gaming company to utilize controller speakers with the Nintendo Wii. Sony PlayStation has taken it a step further by not merely copying game sounds but enhancing gameplay with new ones.
2 Adaptive Triggers
Adaptive triggers on the PlayStation 5 is a big deal now that you can feel weapons like never before. The idea is to make players feel as if they are actually in the game. Adaptive triggers will let you feel the tension of string from a bow, what an empty gun feels like, and much more. DualSense’s adaptive triggers bring players deeper into video games than ever before. So far, we’ve only brushed the surface with games like Demon’s Souls and Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War. The best is yet to come, so sit tight.
1 Haptic Feedback
Haptic feedback falls into the same category as adaptive triggers since they both vibrate the controller for added realism. While adaptive triggers are considered a different type that delivers extraordinary resistance on the triggers, haptic feedback has a broader effect. Players have never felt more in the game with this latest addition to PlayStation 5. The future of gaming is haptics, and it doesn’t appear to be leaving soon.
