It’s that time of year again, and Pokémon Go is gearing up for an action-packed pandemic community weekend this December. The full event will run from 6:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 12th, 2020, through 10:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 13th, 2020 (local time). With old community day Pokémon appearing en mass and older Pokémon appearing commonly in raids, there is a lot that players need to know to make the most out of this annual event.
Players should familiarize themselves with the Pokémon, the schedule, and the rewards that the event has to offer. The December community weekend is a far more complicated and packed weekend than any other community day throughout the year, and so players should prioritize preparing for the event over all else.
10 Know The Pokémon
Every player who wants to make the most out of the December community weekend will need to put in the work and preparation necessary to thrive during the two-day extravaganza; knowing what Pokémon are the focus is the first step in that process.
On the community weekend, players will find Weedle, Abra, Ryhorn, Seedot, Ghastly, Piplup, Charmander, Electabuzz, Magmar, Magikarp, and Porygon in the wild with much higher chances of being shiny. In Raids and in eggs, players will find Totodile, Swinub, Treecko, Torchic, Mudkip, Ralts, Slakoth, Trapinch, Bagon, Turtwig, Chimchar, Mega Gengar, and Mega Charizard X. Any of these Pokémon evolved over the course of the community weekend will have their legacy move only available on their respective community days across 2019 and 2020.
9 Learn The Schedule
Knowing when each Pokémon is available and how the weekend will work is the second thing every player should do to prepare. On Saturday the 12th, from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. local time, players are more likely to find shiny Weedle, Abra, Ryhorn, Seedot, Ghastly, and Piplup, and can battle Mega Gengar in raids.
On Sunday the 13th, from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. local time, players are more likely to encounter shiny Charmander, Electabuzz, Magmar, Magikarp, and Porygon, and can fight Mega Charizard X in raids.
8 Stock Up On Pokéballs
Sometimes community days are just too much for a feeble inventory to control. Players should be sure to make room in their item inventory so that they can constantly spin Pokéstops to maintain a steady supply of items. However, it is important to start loading up with as many ultra balls as possible for those rare encounters with shiny Pokémon, so they can’t run away.
Over the course of the weekend, players will likely start to deplete their supply of Pokéballs, and having a lot off the bat will be a lifesaver. So make some room and stock up!
7 Make Some Room
Speaking of making room, players should go through the Pokémon they have stored and trim the fat here as well. Fans of the series are likely in the mindset of collecting them all, and while that can be beneficial as a new community day could beef up an oldy at any time, some Pokémon will never be worth that crucial save slot.
Transferring older, weaker Pokémon that bring nothing to the table opens up a slot for this weekend where inventories are definitely going to reach their max. Of course, players can pay to increase their Pokémon storage, but at a point, there are just better ways to spend their hard-earned Pokécoins.
6 Hatch Those Eggs
The final way players should analyze their inventory to make space is to hatch all of the eggs they have stuck in their inventory. Players can only hold nine eggs at a time and for an event where some great Pokémon will be available in 2k eggs, it’s vital for players to be ready.
So save those egg incubators, and clear out that storage. 2k eggs are an incredible way to earn loads of candy for these Pokémon that players will want to evolve on the spot, especially since the 2019 community day Pokémon will only be common in raids and eggs. For players who don’t have access to unlimited Pokécoins, eggs will be their best bet.
5 Make Some Cash
Speaking of unlimited Pokécoins, players should always be putting Pokémon into gyms to earn the maximum 50 coins every day, regardless of a community coming up or not. That said, this week it is even more important than usual. Players can use their Pokécoins to purchase incredibly useful items like star pieces, lucky eggs, incenses, and raid passes.
While star pieces and lucky eggs will make the most of the busy weekend to amplify a player’s (already boosted from the event) stardust gain and experience, incense and raid passes will help players keep the weekend going when stuck inside during quarantine. Incense will bring Pokémon to the player for a boosted 3-hour duration and raid passes will let players fight as many limited raid Pokémon as possible.
4 Use Items Efficiently
Players need to understand how to use what they’ve got if they want to get the most stardust, experience, and quality Pokémon over the course of the community weekend. Star pieces will amplify the stardust that players earn and that is one of the most important resources in the game.
Lucky eggs will boost the experience earned from every task in the game. Because of this, the community weekend is a great opportunity for players to make that final push to level 40 before the end of the year. Using these items in conjunction with incense and raid passes will boost players out of their minds, so make sure to coordinate.
3 Load Up On Stardust
Players will be able to earn a massive amount of stardust during the community weekend, but for the sheer amount of Pokémon that they will be able to catch, the boosted gains over two days simply won’t be enough. Stardust allows players to teach Pokémon secondary charge attacks and power them up to make them as strong as they can be.
Before the event, players should be catching as many Pokémon as possible and battling in PvP to get as much stardust as they can leading up to the community weekend. With so many important Pokémon available over the weekend, stardust will be in short supply.
2 Figure Out Priorities
Now that players are mostly ready for the community weekend, it’s important that they figure out which Pokémon are the highest priority over the weekend. Some Pokémon have much more value in the current meta for Pokémon Go, like Swampert, Charizard, and Gyarados.
Evolving these Pokémon over the community weekend will earn players the moves Hydro Cannon, Dragon Breath, and Aqua Tail respectively; each of which brings these Pokémon closer to their maximum potential. These three are powerful, but players should prioritize what they want and what they need, not just what is best.
1 Clear The Schedules
As the community weekend gets closer and closer, players will need to slot out the whole weekend for long walks, a number of rests, and of course, many pit stops at charging stations.
Players and their friends should make plans for when they’re going to go out, where they’re going to go, and how long they’re going to play. While a lot of this can be up to improv, during the pandemic, it’s vital that friends are being careful and safe on these busy weekends.
