The new World of Warcraft expansion, Shadowlands, has a lot to offer players. Both veteran and completely new players will find a lot to do in the new Shadowlands content, from exploring the underworld map to leveling characters in the newest and best specs. Those looking to tank in both raids and Mythic+ may be wondering which specs they should go for to be the best they can be in the new World of Warcraft.
There are two main avenues for tanking in World of Warcraft‘s retail version: Raiding and Mythic+. Both are fine pursuits, and most players tend to lean towards one or the other. Having the choice between the two is something to love about World of Warcraft: Shadowlands.
The best tanking spec for raiding currently in Shadowlands is the Brewmaster Monk, especially those in the Maldraxxus‘s Necrolord Covenant. The class-specific ability Lead by Example pairs perfectly with the already powerful Bonedust Brew from the Brewmaster’s stash. It allows for great multi- and single-target damage throughout the raid, leading to consistently good tanking. Monks were introduced in Mists of Pandaria, and many will likely be pleased to see them really coming into their own with this build.
For tanking in Mythic+, players looking to score big numbers and down enemies quickly will want to look at the Vengeance Demon Hunters. They output incredible amounts of damage, have strong passive mitigation, and can take a beating without needing too much handholding from a healer. Now, coupled with this tank’s best Covenant in Shadowlands, players are also able to clear their own status effects and heal with the class-specific ability, giving them an edge over most other specs for tanks in Mythic+. The ability to slam an enemy with massive hurts while tending to their own put Vengeance Demon Hunters as number 1.
Want to do a little of both? Most casual players, new to World of Warcraft, want to try tanking in both Mythic+ and raids to feel out which fits their playstyle best. There is a build that is thankfully fantastic in both multi-target and single-target damage that these players can choose: Protection Paladin.
If players are interested in trashing Castle Nathria, dig into Mythic+, or even just have a great build for opening more chests in Torghast, the Protection Paladin is great. In spite of the nerf to Punish the Guilty, the Prot Pally is a sort of jack-of-all-trades tank that has their own survival tactics, defensive abilities, immunities, solo interrupts, can buff the raid or the group, and put out decent damage.
World of Warcraft: Shadowlands is available now for PC.
