With so many different species of animals in Red Dead Online, it is nearly impossible to spot them all while riding around the wild west. What is even harder to spot are the critters living in the nooks and crannies of every tree, bush, grassy field, cave, or abandoned building.
This layer of depth when it comes to the animals of Red Dead Online is just one of the reasons some avid gamers consider Red Dead Redemption 2 the greatest game of all time. Here is a list of small animals outlaws didn’t know were in Red Dead Online.
The American Badger is akin to the famous honey badger. Just like the honey badger of the internet the American Badger is extremely aggressive and territorial. The American Badger can be found all over the map of Red Dead Online, except for the area of Grizzlies West. The American Badger feeds on smaller animals, but will also eat grubs and insects. They also love to be near water ways. A diligent outlaw can find them frequently in Lemoyne.
Much like the American Badger the American Muskrat is aggressive and is brazen enough to attack an outlaw who is on foot. The Varmint Rifle works best against them, if a player is seeking a quick clean kill. The American Muskrat loves the water and its largest population is in the swamps of Lemoyne. Outlaws should not underestimate this little furry creature and use caution when hunting them. The American Muskrat can provide players with Stringy Meat and Scent Glands.
Bats are rarely seen in Red Dead Online unless an outlaw wanders into a cave or abandoned house while tracking down a bounty, looking for a treasure chest, or taking down a Gang Hideout.
In fact Bats can only be found in three specific places, Scarlet Meadows, Roanoke Ridge, and Tall Trees. Bats can be easily taken down with Small Game Arrows. Bats also provide String Meat that can be eaten and Bat Wings which can be sold.
Banded Gila Monsters are easily recognized by the bright colored bands going down their tails. These lizards are of the Helodermatidae family and they feed on other small lizards, fish, and bird eggs. The Banded Gila Monster only lives in the area of New Austin. They are not commonly seen by a player not looking for them specifically. These lizards love to congregate near Lake Don Julio south of Armadillo. The Varmint Rifle works best against these little dinosaurs.
The Desert Iguana is a relatively large lizard that loves rocky desert areas. Their diet consists of fruits, specific plants, and small insects and are considered to be herbivores. It is best to use Small Game Arrows or the Varmint Rifle against them in order to earn a perfect skin. The Desert Iguana will also provide an outlaw with Herptile Meat that can be sold for $0.25 or cooked with herbs to fortify cores.
The Midland Water Snake is a non venomous snake that feeds on small lizards, frogs, small fish, and small birds. These snakes will still bite if threatened and release a musky scent from the glands in their tails. The Midland Water Snake’s Stringy Meat can be eaten and its skin can be sold to the Butcher. They are often found in the swamps of Lemoyne around Blue Water Marsh and near Roanoke Ridge in New Hanover.
Surprisingly, for as prevalent as these little guys are, outlaws rarely spot them wall riding around Red Dead Online without actively seeking them out. The North American Raccoon has a repetition of being highly intelligent and resourceful.
Outlaws should use a Varmint Rifle when hunting them and go for a headshot in order to take it down with one shot. They can be found all over the map except for the areas of New Austin and Ambarino.
Very few outlaws know that the Sonoran Desert Toad is the second most toxic toad in the world. These small carnivores love to eat mice, lizards, and insects. In Red Dead Online, outlaws can find the Sonoran Desert Toad on the southeast coast of New Austin, the island on the east coast of Flat Iron Lake or in the swamps of Lemoyne. Only Small Game Arrows can be used against them; anything else will destroy the Herptile Meat.
The Virginia Opossum is a moderately sized rodent with grey or white fur and a furless tail. These interesting little animals respond to oncoming potential treats by playing dead. They can be taken out fairly easily by a Small Game Arrow and will give an outlaw Stringy Meat and Opossum Fur. A player can find the Virginia Opossum in Scarlett Meadows in Lemoyne, north west of Strawberry on the outskirts of Big Valley, or south of the Wapiti Indian Reservation.
The Tamias or more commonly known as the Chipmunk is in the same animal family as the squirrel. These cute little guys look so similar to squirrels in Red Dead Online that they often go unnoticed. Western Chipmunks are recognized by the white stripes going down their backs and tails. They love areas where there is a lot of brush and debris littering the ground. The Western Chipmunk is spotted often near the Wapiti Indian Reservation located in Ambarino.
