Since its release last September, Genshin Impact quickly became a massive hit despite some concerns pre-release that it might be a Zelda rip-off. Luckily for developer miHoYo, the negative perception players once had for Genshin Impact melted away as soon as the game was able to prove that the only thing it has in common with Breath of the Wild is art style.
Despite Genshin Impact’s growing popularity, it is evident that there are still many things the game needs to improve, most especially its security system. Recently, several Genshin Impact players reported that their accounts were taken over by hackers. It is worth noting that while the game itself is free-to-play, some players spend huge amounts of in-game currency to get the characters they want, which increases the overall value of their accounts.
In a Reddit post by user Rabbit Outside, they revealed miHoYo’s response after they reported their hacked account. While the usual approach to a hacked account is to return it to its original owner, miHoYo claimed Rabbit Outside’s account could not be returned because the hacker purchased “Top Ups” for the account. This means that a hacker can easily steal an account in Genshin Impact and keep it as long as they purchase something cheap from the game, like a Blessing of the Welkin Moon for $5.
It is worth noting that the authenticity of this Reddit post remains a mystery. Many players were suspicious of the video, given that anything can be faked on the Internet. The user also reported that their support ticket was immediately closed after the post gained attention. In the end, the player was luckily able to request a chargeback. Still, they revealed that getting their account back is no longer a priority, given that they have lost interest in Genshin Impact, whose mobile version made $400 million in a span of two months.
Developer miHoYo still has not commented on the issue, but assuming that it is true, this could become a major concern for players who are spending real-life money in the game. It is worth noting that since the game’s release, several players have spent insane amounts of money on Genshin Impact, such as YouTuber Mtashed, who spent $2,000 to expose the gacha game’s odds. For now, players are advised to ensure that they protect their accounts from online hackers, especially those who have put in countless hours and amounts of money into Genshin Impact.
Genshin Impact is available for Mobile, PC, and PS4 and is currently in development for Nintendo Switch.
