There’s no denying that The Mandalorian, Disney+’s exclusive Star Wars show has been successful. Baby Yoda became an instant favorite amongst adults and children and the titular character himself is now cameoing in Fortnite, one of the most recognized and popular video games in the world.
While the possibility of The Mandalorian getting a videogame of his own isn’t necessarily a new conversation topic, no doubt his Fortnite appearance has revitalized it, with game developers like Cory Barlog even expressing a desire for such a game.
Barlog, the director for multiple entries in the God of War series, including the 2018 PlayStation 4 title, took to Twitter with his own idea for a game based on the show. He suggests a single-player game where players would take control of a bounty hunter (not necessarily Mando himself) and fly from system to system getting into adventures and doing what bounty hunters do best. He also says that it would ideally have a strong focus on character development and tackle relatable, impossible decisions.
It, of course, should be noted that this is by no means a confirmation that Barlog himself will make such a game. For starters, he’s likely too preoccupied with the God of War sequel (referred to by many as God of War: Ragnarok) which is supposed to be releasing next year. What’s more, if anyone is going to make a Mandalorian game, it’d the company that holds the rights to making Star Wars games: EA.
In recent times, EA has appeared to acknowledge the want for single-player titles set in the Star Wars universe. The recent Star Wars: Squadrons, though with more of a focus on multiplayer, does have a single-player campaign. And 2019’s Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, after finally giving fans the solo adventure they so desperately craved for, went on to become a critical and financial success.
Hopefully, these successes will encourage EA to at least consider the possibility. It could even take inspiration from 2002’s Star Wars: Bounty Hunter, an action title that put players in control of Jango Fett, the bounty hunter from Attack of the Clones and ‘father’ of Boba Fett.
There was, in fact, possibly a game that would’ve given Barlog just what he described: Star Wars 1313. The game would’ve centered around Boba Fett and was in development at LucasArts, but it was canceled after the studio was shut down following Disney’s acquisition of the Star Wars franchise.
