Nvidia and AMD Supply Issues to Last Into 2021 Due to Memory Shortages

Despite the exciting new hardware releases from Nvidia and AMD, 2020 is proving to be a very difficult year for gamers wanting to upgrade their graphics cards, as demand for both the RTX 30 Series and the RX 6000 Series have significantly outstripped supply. The latest report suggests that a shortage in GDDR6 memory is making the problem worse, and that the situation is unlikely to change until well into 2021.

The news comes from French website Cowcotland, whose sources stated that GDDR6 memory supply is unlikely to return to normal for several weeks. Meaning that supply of most new Nvidia and AMD graphics cards to retailers is unlikely to return to normal until February, even if the releases of new models such as custom RX 6900 XT variants are delayed. It will likely take even longer to finally start making a dent in the excess demand.

The shortage won’t be affecting all the new cards, as the report also included a small piece of good news for gamers awaiting the RTX 3080, stating that the newer GDDR6X memory modules used in Nvidia’s flagship cards are less affected by the supply issues. However, Nvidia has also stated that GPU wafer and component supplies are also being constrained, so its supply of these cards is unlikely to improve until 2021 either.

Short supply of the latest hardware has been the leading factor in the re-emergence of scalping as a serious problem for gamers, affecting graphics cards, CPUs, and both of the new generation console launches. On top of this, demand from crypto currency miners is helping to ensure gamers have almost no chance of finding new hardware, even one minute after launch. It is a perfect storm for the industry, enormous demand combined with supply shortages, meaning that even had Nvidia and AMD delayed its launches until December, product supplies would have still been slim.

Late 2020 is proving to be both the most exciting and most frustrating period in recent hardware history for PC gamers, with a range of amazing new products that are simply impossible for the average gamer to find. Some people will question why Nvidia and AMD launched products with such tiny availabilities, but with such significant supply shortages, both companies appear to have been left with little choice.

Perhaps the answer in the future is for Nvidia and AMD to focus on a single product when launching a new generation of graphics hardware, rather than splitting already slim manufacturing resources across multiple cards.

Nvidia RTX 30 Series and AMD RX 6000 Series are available now in very limited quantities.
