Spider-Man: 10 Peter Parker Mannerisms From The Comics Tom Holland Nails

Marvel has many popular heroes with thousands of fans. But Spider-Man is one of the most famous ones – partially because he’s started his superhero life as a teenager which gave young people someone to identify with. Considering his enormous popularity, it’s only natural Spider-Man appeared in multiple films.

Three different actors played him in the 21st century – Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield, and Tom Holland. Holland has been playing Spider-Man in the MCU since 2016 and had two solo films so far. Many fans believe Tom Holland is the best Spider-Man of all three, and he certainly nails many Peter Parker mannerisms from the comics.

10 He’s A Loner

Peter Parker never was a party animal or the most popular kid in school. In fact, Peter struggles with keeping his friendships intact. He doesn’t have that many close friends – and not only because he has to keep his superhero identity a secret. Tom Holland’s Peter is relaxed when he’s around his friends but he can be quite awkward around other people which makes it difficult for him to build new relationships.

9 He Can Sense Danger

No matter what the creators call it – the classical Spidey sense or the MCU Peter-tingle, Peter has the ability to sense upcoming danger. That’s a handy tool when he’s fighting villains or just everyday criminals. But both in the comics and in the films, this ability doesn’t always work. Peter uses it a few times in the MCU when the situation is dire but other times, he has to rely on other powers he has – as well as his intelligence.

8 He Crushes On MJ

Even a superhero can find the time to fall in love and build romances (or try to, anyway). Peter has dated multiple women in the comics – but his one true love is Mary Jane Watson. And even though the MCU changed Mary Jane to Michelle “MJ” Jones, the relationship between her and Peter is similar to the comics. Peter is awkward around MJ, especially once he realizes he has a crush on her. And he wants to make her happy by doing all these little gestures he thinks MJ will like – such as spending his hard-earned money to get MJ a gift she would like.

7 He’s Not Lucky At Relationships

In the comics, Peter often struggles with the so-called “Parker luck”. Basically, he has a string of bad misfortunes happen to him and it runs in the family. In the film, Peter has problems with his personal relationships.

His first crush – Liz – turns out to be the Vulture’s daughter. And when Peter crushes on MJ, at first it looks like another guy is going to win MJ for himself. Peter simply can’t catch a break.

6 He Hero Worships Superheroes

Peter is just a kid when he first meets and fights alongside (or against) his favorite superheroes. In the comics and animated TV shows as well, Peter has hero worship going on when it comes to the likes of Iron Man and Captain America. He looks up to them and tries to impress them. That’s also the case in the films. Peter is nervous when he meets Tony Stark and later when he interacts with Captain America, he shakily lets him know he’s a big fan of the Captain – even though they stand on opposite sides of the Civil War.

5 He Misses His Uncle

Peter’s motivation to become a hero in the comics is the tragic death of his uncle Ben. Peter blames himself because he didn’t stop the criminal who later killed Ben – even though he could have. The MCU didn’t show uncle Ben’s death but from the odd mentions, it’s clear Peter still misses him. And he went on to become a superhero for the same reason he did in the comics – to right his wrongs and help those in need.

4 He Has The Youthful Enthusiasm

Depending on the version of the comics the fans read, Spider-Man is one of the youngest heroes. That’s especially obvious in the series The Ultimate Spider-Man. Unlike some older, more jaded heroes, Spidey still approaches the world around him with youthful enthusiasm.

Tom Holland captures this well as his Peter/Spider-Man shows joy and excitement even in situations that would make other people serious or wary – such as when he fights Bucky Barnes and marvels at Bucky’s metal arm.

3 He’s Talkative

Peter Parker is full of contradictions. On one hand, he can be quite shy – in front of strangers, or the girls he crushes on, the heroes he likes. On the other hand, he’s a bit of a chatterbox and likes to talk a lot – and fast. That happens either when he’s discussing something he’s passionate about or when he hides his face and swings around as Spider-Man. Tom Holland’s Spidey has the added advantage of no longer talking to himself – instead, he can chat with the AI in his suit, Karen.

2 He’s Funny

Speaking of chatting, despite all the tragic things that happened to him (the death of his parents and uncle), Peter Parker doesn’t lose his optimism and sense of humor. He’s one of the heroes who believe that things can get better – as long as they keep trying. In the MCU, Peter likes to throw funny remarks around, most often when he’s dealing with his enemies – and it drives them crazy!

1 He’s Intelligent

Despite the fact that he spends a lot of time running around as Spider-Man, Peter mostly does well in school. He’s naturally intelligent, one could even say brilliant. And he has an inventive streak in him which means he’s able to come up with his own useful tools. Peter also uses his intelligence in the MCU often enough, like the time he designed his own web-shooters even though he had no fancy equipment at hand to help him. And he was able to hold intelligent conversations with Tony Stark which is no easy task.
