Bob Odenkirk, best known as sleazebag lawyer Saul Goodman from the Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul TV shows, is spreading his wings a bit in a brand new film. The project, titled Nobody, is being developed by Universal Pictures and will be an action film heavily inspired by the John Wick franchise with Odenkirk taking the place of Keanu Reeves. A recent trailer has been published showing just how heavily based on John Wick it really is, right down to the hero with a shady past who gets drawn back into a violent power struggle by sheer coincidence.
Unlike John Wick, however, Nobody seems to be leaning slightly more into some comedic moments and giving a stronger focus on the emotional state of the protagonist. As described in the synopsis: “Bob Odenkirk stars as Hutch Mansell, an underestimated and overlooked dad and husband, taking life’s indignities on the chin and never pushing back. A nobody. When two thieves break into his suburban home one night, Hutch declines to defend himself or his family, hoping to prevent serious violence. His teenage son, Blake is disappointed in him and his wife, Becca seems to pull only further away.”
This is, of course, the inciting event that inspires Hutch Mansell to return to his violent past. “The aftermath of the incident strikes a match to Hutch’s long-simmering rage, triggering dormant instincts and propelling him on a brutal path that will surface dark secrets and lethal skills. In a barrage of fists, gunfire and squealing tires, Hutch must save his family from a dangerous adversary and ensure that he will never be underestimated as a nobody again.” The trailer features a basic tease of the premise, a few comedic moments from Bob Odenkirk, and of course a ton of action scenes in the style of the John Wick films.
The trailer is age restricted of course, so those who want to check it out will have to sign in to their accounts. Overall it seems like an admirable attempt to recreate the same magic as the John Wick series, with a few tweaks to the formula. Whether or not it will live up to the high bar set by that series will have to be seen when the film finally hits theaters.
Nobody is currently scheduled to release February 26, 2021.
