Cyberpunk 2077 gives players an unprecedented amount of freedom when creating their character, even going so far as to let them fully customize their character’s genitalia. Naturally, players seem to really enjoy playing with this part of the game, so many are wondering if there’s a way to change a character’s appearance in the middle of a playthrough.
CD Projekt Red promises to deliver over 100 hours of gameplay with Cyberpunk 2077, a bold claim to be sure. While the character creation is incredibly detailed, fans wouldn’t be blamed for wanting to change things up part way through. Unfortunately, it looks like that may not be possible with the game in its current state.
To put it plainly, there is currently no way to change a character’s appearance after character creation. Whatever the player chooses at the beginning of the game is what they’re stuck with. Even if Cyberpunk 2077 didn’t go as far as letting players change gender midgame like Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla, it still would have been nice to have some level of customization available.
As things stand, the only way players can change their appearance during a game is by changing their clothing at clothing stores. Things like gender, skin tone, tattoos, and even haircut are all off limits and cannot be modified. In a game built around the premise of cybernetic enhancements and body modification, this seems especially bizarre. It is theoretically possible that this could change in future updates or that the method for doing this hasn’t been found yet, but for now it seems that players are out of luck if they want to go back to that stunning character creation menu.
There’s a silver lining to all this, and that’s that Cyberpunk 2077 is primarily a first-person game. The only time players will actually see their character is when they are in a menu, looking at a mirror, or driving in third person view. With that in mind, a player’s appearance may not really matter all that much, as even in cutscenes things are kept in the first-person perspective all throughout.
Hopefully CD Projekt Red realizes how important customization is to fans of Cyberpunk 2077 and the RPG genre in general and adds a way for players to change their character after character creation. It could easily be something that players can do at the Ripperdoc, and it wouldn’t even be that far-fetched to allow players to change things like appearance and gender within the world of Cyberpunk 2077.
Cyberpunk 2077 is available now on PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One.
