Cyberpunk 2077 Sold 8 Million Units Before It Was Even Out

It’s no secret that Cyberpunk 2077 was one of the most highly anticipated games of the year, but a recent figure showing over 8 million sales before it even came out backs that up. Selling 8 million copies of a game is an achievement in and of itself, but managing to do so before the game releases is an impressive feat.

Coming from CD Projekt Red, the same studio responsible for the massively popular The Witcher 3, it should come as no surprise that fans are excited about this game. Cyberpunk 2077 been frequently hyped as the biggest game of 2020, promising fans over 100 hours of gameplay in a world full of customization and choice.

CD Projekt Red made a statement about the impressive milestone on Twitter today, thanking fans for trusting it to produce a great game like it has many times in the past. The number of sales is likely to continue to increase now that launch day is finally here, and the game should keep getting better as well.

Naturally, there are some problems with the game that fans aren’t too happy about. Cyberpunk 2077 is struggling on last generation consoles like the PS4 and Xbox One, the graphics are particularly lackluster. All players have been noticing some immersion breaking bugs during their playthrough, and things don’t seem quite as polished as they ought to for a game of this caliber. Thankfully, CD Projekt Red addressed this too in a way, claiming that it is hard at work trying to fix and update the game as soon as possible.

Despite this, fan reception to the tweet is mostly negative, with many lamenting the aforementioned issues and more. A common theme among comments is that the game is “unplayable” on PS4, with many wondering why these issues weren’t noticed and addressed before release. The problem is exacerbated by the fact that Cyberpunk 2077 was subject to several delays, leaving fans confused about how these issues weren’t fixed during that time. With any luck, CD Projekt Red will make good on its promise to fix many of these issues, but until then many fans are left sorely disappointed.

It’s a shame to see Cyberpunk 2077 launch with so many problems, but given that the fan base was devoted enough to pre-order 8 million copies of the game before release, it’s very likely that they’ll stick around for patches and updates in the future. That kind of devotion is uncommon, and CD Projekt Red surely recognizes that.

Cyberpunk 2077 is available now on PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One.
