Though CD Projekt Red stated that Cyberpunk 2077 music would be safe for streaming near the end of October, this statement was only partially correct. While most of the game’s soundtrack is safe for streaming, a few tracks are licensed and could result in DMCA takedowns if caught by Twitch. While Streaming Mode is supposed to prevent the licensed songs from being played on stream, it appears that the “disable copyrighted music” option is not entirely effective.
CD Projekt Red tweeted that one song has not been removed with Streaming Mode, warning that a Twitch DMCA strike could be handed out to streamers who are not careful. The song in question plays during “the first two Braindance sequences,” which occur near the start of the game. For players who began streaming the second the game launched, this warning may not have been seen, with the copyrighted song being played for an entire audience of Twitch viewers.
For streamers who were able to see the warning, CD Projekt Red’s advice to “turn off the sound” during the Braindance section of the game should have been effective enough to avoid any DMCA strikes on Twitch. While the situation is frustrating, CD Projekt Red has confirmed that they are currently working “on fixing it,” news that should be reassuring to players looking to stream the game in the future. While this misstep is frustrating, the intentions behind Streaming Mode are good, with streamer xQc praising CD Projekt Red for the steps taken to protect streamers and the rules outlined for Cyberpunk 2077 streams.
This latest DMCA takedown worry is the latest in a long saga regarding the use of licensed music on Twitch. With players in constant fear of their channels being given a strike or even taken down entirely, Twitch CEO Emmett Shear has had to go on record with an apology. However, with improvements still on the way and DMCA rules still extremely strict on the platform, Cyberpunk 2077’s Streamer Mode is a smart addition that should make the experience easier for streamers when it is working properly again.
For Cyberpunk 2077 players forced to silence the game’s audio in the Braindance sequence, perhaps taking a page from Twitch streamer Jambo could be useful. With the streamer providing her own Skyrim sound effects earlier this month, doing the same with this Cyberpunk 2077 section could make a frustrating moment into a fun one.
Cyberpunk 2077 is now available on PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One, with a PS5 and Xbox Series X upgrade planned for 2021.
