Fallout 4: 10 Things Players Missed In Vault 81 | Game Rant

Vaults are a common sight in the Fallout universe. Players can find a working vault while exploring the ruins of Boston in Fallout 4. By walking to the entrance and gaining access, players are able to learn more about the vault. Completing quests and speaking to the vault dwellers will reveal a few secrets in the vault.

There are also random encounters around the Commonwealth that give reference to Vault 81. Players who search around the vault can also find symbols and references to the Great War that they might have otherwise meant. There are sure to be some things in the vault that players have not noticed.

10 Referenced By Newscaster At Beginning Of Game

When players first start Fallout 4, they might notice a newscaster on the television. It is understandable that players are not paying attention to the newscaster. If the player stops and listens, they might hear some familiar vaults being mentioned.

The newscaster will mention there are still openings in Vaults 81, 111, and 114. Because of the bombing only a few minutes later, maybe this means Vault 81 was not fully filled.

9 Can Return Vault Kitty

By speaking to Erin Combes in the vault, players can be given a special quest. The quest will require players to return Erin’s kitty, Ashes, who got out of the vault. While it sounds like every cat ever, the cat did not get that far from the vault.

Ashes can be found on a dock near the Chestnut Hillock Reservoir. After interacting with the cat, it will run back to the vault where it will stay for the rest of the game. Erin will be thankful, giving the player a reward.

8 Can Have HP Lowered By 10

There is a secret area of Vault 81 which contains infected molerats. Exploring the secret wing of the vault can be a danger to the player if they aren’t careful. The player can be attacked and infected with the disease. This causes the player to permanently lose 10 HP unless they get a cure.

Another vault resident, the child named Austin Engill, was also infected by the molerats. This leaves players with a choice — either keeping the cure or giving it to the child. Keeping the cure will cause the child to die, while giving the cure away will cause the player to lose the 10 HP permanently.

7 Deacon Will Change Into Vault 81 Jumpsuit

Deacon is a member of the Railroad and a potential companion for the Sole Survivor. Deacon will change his outfit to blend into places, with Vault 81 being no exception. When the player and Deacon enter the vault, Deacon will change into the vault suit. Despite this, vault dwellers will still know he isn’t from the vault.

6 Vault Clocks Stuck At 9:47

The clocks around Boston can be seen stuck at 9:47. This is a reference to the time the Great War occurred — right at 9:47. It makes sense for the clocks outside the vault to be stuck on this time, but the clocks in Vault 81 are also stuck.

While it makes sense that Bethesda probably thought no one would look, it’s interesting to see the vault clocks stuck. Or maybe the clocks in the vault just coincidentally stopped at 9:47.

5 Possibly Allied With Railroad

Players who look at the side of Vault 81’s entrance might notice a chalk symbol. This is a Railroad symbol, meaning the vault is most likely allied with the Railroad. Perhaps the vault takes in escaped Synths or gives the Railroad supplies.

Maybe this means some of the vault residents are synths. This would also explain where Deacon gets his Vault 81 jumpsuit from. It is also likely The Institute does not want to attack the vault or does not know it is a Railroad ally.

4 Medical Bobblehead Found In Vault

Players who are looking for the Bobbleheads can find one in the secret wing of Vault 81. The Medicine Bobblehead can be found in Curie’s office. Players will not be able to access it until they start the Hole in the Wall quest.

When picked up, the Bobblehead will make it so stimpak healing is increased by 10%. Pairing this with the Medic perk will give a boost to the player’s healing.

3 Trader Rylee From Vault 81

Players who go to Longneck Lukowski’s Cannery can find a trader named Rylee. After this encounter, she can be found wandering the Commonwealth as a trader. Players might also notice from her jumpsuit that she is from Vault 81.

This is confirmed by talking to Rylee. She explains she does not have a Pip-Boy because hers broke. Players can also recruit Rylee to a settlement, where she can become a settlement merchant.

2 Resident Taken Hostage By Raiders

Players can stumble across a Vault 81 resident who was taken hostage by raiders. Players can decide to intervene or leave the resident to their fate. If the resident is saved, they will thank the player and return to their vault. If players have not run across Vault 81 yet, this will mark it on their map.

1 Original Overseer Ruined Vault-Tec’s Plans

Each vault is supposed to have an experiment attached to it. Vault 81’s experiment is attached to the secret wing, where the vault was supposed to make a cure for every illness. The vault dwellers would be used as the test subjects, but the first overseer put an end to this.

She sabotaged the vault experiment, making it so the science staff was not notified to report in. Only three scientists appeared, making it easier for the overseer to watch over the experiment. As time went on, the experiment was forgotten about, with the secret wing of the vault being forgotten about until 2287.
