Netflix Teases New Sonic the Hedgehog Animated Series | Game Rant

Netflix may have just jumped the gun a bit. In a now-deleted tweet on its “NX on Netflix” Twitter account, the streaming giant teased an upcoming 3D Sonic the Hedgehog animated series set to release in 2022. The announcement was only up for a short time, but had already gotten the attention of thousands of excited fans before being taken down.

“Rings? Check. Sneakers? Check. Speed? SONIC. SEGA’s legendary video game icon Sonic the Hedgehog races onto Netflix in a new 3D animated series from @SEGA, @WildBrainHQ and @ManOfActionEnt premiering in 2022.” The content of the tweet itself certainly seemed legitimate enough, so it’s possible the timing was only wrong due to plans to make the announcement itself at the December 10th Game Awards. It would certainly fit the ceremony’s history of sprinkling in big gaming news among its various honors.

The tweet also mentioned WildBrain and Man of Action as two companies involved in the series. The Canadian media company WildBrain (formerly known as DHX Media) is the current owner of the Peanuts and Teletubbies brands, as well as the 2019 Carmen Sandiego series. Man of Action, meanwhile, is a studio best known for shows like Ben 10 and Big Hero 6: The Series. So Sega clearly wanted to bring in some power players with this new series.

It’s unclear whether the series will tie into the upcoming sequel to 2020’s well-received and surprisingly popular Sonic the Hedgehog movie, which is also set to release in 2022. The 2020 film concluded on a rather open-ended note, allowing for a comfortable ending right there or any number of continuations, so a side series wouldn’t be all that unusual or unexpected. But considering the critical success of the recent Sonic Boom TV series, maybe Sega wants to take another shot at that formula.

With 2020’s Sonic the Hedgehog movie and 2019’s Pokémon: Detective Pikachu, as well as other projects coming up the pipeline, it seems to be the era of the video game adaptation. While other attempts over the years have been famously poorly-received, such as the infamous Super Mario Bros. movie in 1993, many studios appear to have discovered the secret method of making satisfactory tie-ins. So unlike the response some may have had in past years, a new Sonic series is likely to draw a favorable response from eager fans.

Of course, only time will tell. While there’s no guarantee of the show’s quality, Sega’s recent efforts to overhaul the franchise’s public image have been largely successful, with some well-regarded games, a high-quality show, and even a cleverly-operated Twitter account for the character himself. So feelings regarding this new show are bound to be on the eager side (at least, when it’s finally announced for real).
