The Game Awards 2020 is kicking off tonight and while the focus will be on awarding and celebrating the games released this year, most of the attention is likely focused on new game announcements. Host Geoff Keighley has already confirmed that there will be around 12 to 15 game reveals at the event and Microsoft will be in attendance in some fashion. Now it’s been confirmed that Nintendo will announce the next DLC fighter for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate too.
It hasn’t been that long since Minecraft‘s Steve was revealed and released for Nintendo’s crossover fighting game, but fans have been hungry for a new character over the last couple of months regardless. Fans were unsure if Nintendo would make such an announcement at The Game Awards, though, considering that it skipped it last year and instead revealed Byleth from Fire Emblem: Three Houses in January instead.
While it’s almost impossible to predict who the new character could be, there are a couple of popular theories that are floating around at the moment. Firstly, considering the last time Nintendo revealed a new Super Smash Bros. Ultimate character at The Game Awards, it was Joker from Persona 5, it’s expected that, whoever it is, will be another major reveal on the same level, like a heavily requested character.
For example, Geno from Super Mario RPG has been a popular fan choice since even the days of Super Smash Bros. Brawl on the Wii. The most recent in-game tournament, which is all centered around mushrooms, has some believing that it has some connection to Geno himself, but there have been rumors and theories like this in the past, so it’s hardly conclusive proof.
Another possibility is that it’s a character from Fortnite, such as Jonesy. Not only has Epic Games hinted at a potential crossover in the past, Fortnite‘s inclusion of Kratos from God of War and possible inclusion of Master Chief from Halo has led to another theory that Samus from Metroid will be added to the battle-royale too. If so, a mutual collaboration between Nintendo and Epic Games makes sense.
As always, though, these are just theories. Before Steve was announced, the most popular theories leading up to his reveal were that the new fighter would be Crash Bandicoot or Sora from Kingdom Hearts, both of which obviously never came to be.
As exciting as this all is, it’s unlikely to mitigate much of the backlash Nintendo has been receiving from the competitive Smash Bros. community, after the company shut down a tournament for using an unofficial copy of Super Smash Bros. Melee.
