Last week, Niantic announced that, in between all the December related content, Pokemon GO will be holding a new event to tie in with the Secrets of the Jungle movie (or Pokemon Coco as it’s called in Japan) that’s finally releasing this month, after it was subjected to delays due to the coronavirus.
Most of what the event entails has already been revealed by Niantic, like the chance to encounter a shiny Celebi, but dataminers have managed to uncover a couple of extra details that Niantic didn’t mention and images of the new Explorer Pikachu that will be making a special appearance.
Shared on Reddit, Explorer Pikachu wears a unique hat and satchel over its shoulder that resembles another Pokemon, Wailmer. This isn’t a costume made just for Pokemon GO either, as Pikachu will wear the outfit in the new movie as well. The images also confirm that it will be possible to catch a shiny Pikachu in the Explorer costume.
This isn’t necessarily something new for the game; there have been various Pikachus wearing different kinds of hats, from a Christmas hat to ones that Ash wore in the anime to a Detective Pikachu hat as seen in the movie. In fact, judging from some of the comments, some fans are growing tired of seeing more alternate Pikachus, so several others appear to love the Explorer Pikachu. One fan says that it might be their favorite design for Pikachu.
Aside from that, the datamine also reveals a new forest background and two new Shadow Pokemon, corrupted Pokemon that are used by Team Rocket, namely Wooper and its evolution Quagsire. Some fans seem a bit confused as to why these two Pokemon specifically are being included, as the returning duo of Jessie and James have never owned either of them, with one fan theorizing that maybe they’ll encounter a Wooper or Quagsire in the movie.
The Secrets of the Jungle event kicks off on Monday December 14th and will run for a week until December 21st. And while Explorer Pikachu can be found throughout the course of the event in both the wild and raids, it will appear more frequently during a Spotlight Hour on December 15th.
As a reminder, Pokemon GO will also be hosting a limited-time event later today to coincide with The Game Awards 2020, which will offer more Stardust from catching Pokemon and more encounters with Team Rocket Grunts.
And in February, a major global event will take place which acts as a throwback to the original Red and Green games and focus on the first 150 Pokemon that can be found in the first generation’s Kanto region.
Pokemon GO is available on Android and iOS devices.
