According to Riot Forge, Ruined King: A League of Legends Story is seeing a delay. Fans of the upcoming RPG and League of Legends champions will have to wait until sometime later in 2021 before they can access the game.
This news comes on the eve of The Game Awards 2020; interesting timing given that Ruined King was first announced at last year’s ceremony. Riot Forge originally made the claim during Worlds 2020 that Ruined King would be available in ‘Early 2021.’ However, an update via Twitter says that timeline is being changed to just, ‘Coming 2021.’
League of Legends is an incredibly popular multiplayer series, with Worlds 2020 seeing millions of concurrent viewers, so a foray into single player for the universe came as a surprise. Unlike the multiplayer online battle arena it’s based on, Ruined King will focus on an immersive turn-based RPG format. Players can configure their party of League champions while exploring locations of Runeterra like Bilgewater and the Shadow Isles.
According to Riot Forge, 2020 has seen a host of obstacles hindering its original plans for Ruined King. This is not shocking given the COVID-19 pandemic has led to many major game delays. With the changing timeline, it sounds like there will need to be adjustments made for the upcoming title. It is clear Riot Forge wants to release a project that lives up to the vision of developers Airship Syndicate.
While this may come as a disappointment to some, Riot Forge mentions it wants to be transparent about development. Too often game developers experiences put out information that can result in unrealistic expectations or unfinished releases. Games like League of Legends and Valorant, one of the best FPS games of 2020, have seen positive reception, so it makes sense that Riot Forge would delay Ruined King to avoid letting down its community.
Riot Games has a clear focus on multiplayer gaming, and a single-player experience could just be part of its initiative to grow its playerbase. Riot Forge is a publishing label within Riot Games that works with third-party developers, and while Airship Syndicate does have experience with spin-off games, living up to League of Legends could pose a challenge. While fans will need to wait a little bit longer for Ruined King, they can take solace in the fact that Riot Forge is being transparent about its progress.
Ruined King: A League of Legends Story is in development for 2021 on the Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
