The Wolf Among Us 2 has gone through a bizarre development timelines. The sequel to Telltale’s series of episodic narrative adventures from 2013 has been highly anticipated ever since the ending of the first game, which many saw as a cliffhanger. After the studio’s closure in 2018, fans assumed that The Wolf Among Us 2 had been canceled, however a revival of the project was announced at 2019’s Game Awards. Following leaks earlier this week, Telltale Games confirmed that the game will not be presented at The Game Awards 2020.
The Wolf Among Us 2 was originally announced during San Diego Comic Con 2017, with an intended release in 2018. However, after some major internal restructuring, Telltale Games announced that the game would be delayed to 2019. Later that year, Telltale suddenly announced it would be closing following challenges the studio was facing, mainly due to the amount of projects it had taken on in such a short timeframe and the rapid ageing of its Telltale Tool engine. In 2019, a newly established Telltale Games announced that its first project would be a reboot of The Wolf Among Us 2 built with Unreal Engine 4.
While it has been a year since any news about The Wolf Among Us 2 has emerged, rumors hit discussion boards such as Reddit earlier this week implying the game would receive a new trailer at The Game Awards. These rumors also stated the game would be released all at once in winter 2021 on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. Telltale Games has released a statement on Twitter claiming it has no news to reveal for The Wolf Among Us 2 currently, and likely won’t for the foreseeable future.
What this statement reveals is that Telltale Games is developing each instalment of the episodic series consecutively, as opposed to the original series which saw up to six months between episode releases due to its “when it’s done” development cycle. This means that instead of releasing titles monthly, Telltale could be eyeing up a weekly release cycle similar to Dontnod and Xbox Game Studios’ Tell Me Why. The studio confirmed upon the game’s re-reveal that The Wolf Among Us 2 will be episodic, despite what the previous rumors claimed.
While it is exciting to hear an update on The Wolf Among Us 2, this does come with the caveat that fans are unlikely to see the game again until deep into 2021. As Telltale Games does highlight, the studio has been working to bring back previously delisted titles from its back-catalogue, such as Wallace & Gromit’s Grand Adventures and Tales From Monkey Island. Some titles from Telltale’s past such as Sam & Max Save the World and The Walking Dead are owned by other companies, though they titles have been remastered by other studios.
The Wolf Among Us 2 is currently in development.
