It’s a big night for the gaming industry as the annual Game Awards event is not only announcing winners for various categories, but fans are seeing all sorts of new game announcements as well. The newly digital event has revealed some major AAA announcements like Sephiroth joining Super Smash Bros Ultimate to some newer unannounced titles like Turtle Rock Studio’s Left 4 Dead inspired multiplayer shooter, Back 4 Blood. Studio Wildcard, the makers of Ark: Survival Evolved also had a surprising announcement of their own thanks in large part to a surprising celebrity appearance.
A new trailer for Ark 2 showed off more of what people love about the first game, humans battling with dinosaurs, other prehistoric animals, along with some mythical and original creatures as well. Although the debut trailer was largely CG, it looks to contain a lot of familiar elements while placing a greater emphasis on story telling as well.
However, the biggest surprise came right at the beginning before the logo appeared. Vin Diesel, a major Hollywood actor involved in such franchises like Fast & Furious, Pitch Black, and others, appeared as the lead character in a tribe of characters. Soon enough, his tribe is attacked by a group of creatures which Vin’s character, Santiago, is forced to fight off. To make matters worse, the skirmish is soon interrupted by dinosaurs.
Vin’s character is ultimately able to stave off the attacking creatures as well as avoiding the hungry dinosaurs by running into what appears to be the safety of a cave system. Instead, the large room reveals a ton of futuristic tech laying around reminiscent of a game like Horizon: Zero Dawn. The room seemingly powers up, mixing tech with stone pillars containing primative drawings. Clearly familiar with this technology, Vin Diesel taps a code into the Genesis System interface powering it down for the time being.
The sequel announcement as well as the reveal of Vin Diesel’s character Santiago was just the start for Studio Wildcard. Following the flashy CG trailer for Ark 2, the studio revealed another trailer for Ark: The Animated Series. The animated adventure features some major actors involved with the project including Gerard Butler, Russel Crowe, Karl Urban, Malcolm McDowell, and many more. Not much is known about the project as of yet outside of the fact that it will be exploring more of Helena’s backstory.
Ark 2 is currently in development.
