The NPD Group’s Mat Piscatella has revealed the top 20 best-selling games for November 2020. The list includes a wide range of titles, with the top five spots dominated by familiar franchises. As expected, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is the best-selling game for November 2020, followed by Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Madden NFL 21, and NBA 2K21.
Piscatella noted that a Call of Duty game has been the best-selling game for its launch month every year since 2007. The last time Call of Duty wasn’t the best-selling game in its launch month, it was beaten by another Activision product in the form of Guitar Hero 3: Legends of Rock in 2007. Needless to say, Activision has been hugely dominant in the video game industry for well over a decade now, and is showing no signs of slowing down.
The rest of the top 10 include Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, Watch Dogs: Legion, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, FIFA 21, and Demon’s Souls. Out of the top 10 best-selling games for November 2020, only three titles are pure exclusives for their platforms, those being Hyrule Warriors, Animal Crossing, and Demon’s Souls, with the latter having to contend with the PS5’s limited availability.
Meanwhile, the bottom 10 games on Piscatella’s list is largely dominated by Nintendo products, including Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, which has proven that it has some incredible staying power. It’s joined by Super Mario 3D All-Stars, New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, Luigi’s Mansion 3, Mario Kart Live; Home Circuit, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has similar staying power as Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, and with new content still being released for the game, it may keep making sales chart appearances for some time to come. Just recently, it was confirmed that Final Fantasy 7‘s Sephiroth is coming to the game as its next DLC fighter at some point later this month.
Non-Nintendo games on the list include Just Dance 2021, Marvel’s Avengers, Mortal Kombat 11, and Ghost of Tsushima, which took the 13th, 18th, 19th, and 20th spots, respectively. Out of those, one of the most interesting titles to see make an appearance is Marvel’s Avengers, as the game’s sales struggles have been well-documented. While it’s sold millions of copies, Marvel’s Avengers has not made back the money Square Enix spent to develop it yet, and has had problems keeping its playerbase engaged. Perhaps the new Kate Bishop DLC will get some lapsed players to return to the co-op brawler, but that remains to be seen.
December 2020 had significantly less new releases than November did, but the list should consist of many familiar faces. One game that could very well top the list of best-selling games, though, is CD Projekt Red’s Cyberpunk 2077, which managed to turn a profit on its very first day of release.
