Cyberpunk 2077 Beats PC Game Sales Record Just Set by World of Warcraft

Blizzard Entertainment achieved an impressive feat recently, as it announced this week that World of Warcraft: Shadowlands just became the fastest-selling PC game of all time. Unfortunately, that achievement proved to be short-lived, because Cyberpunk 2077 has broken the record Shadowlands just set.

It’s plain to see that people have been excited for CD Projekt Red’s next big title in the leadup to release, given the years the developer has spent building up and hyping its ambitious open-world RPG. Even before yesterday’s launch, Cyberpunk 2077 was already a huge success, having racked up 8 million pre-orders across the board, according to CD Red.

A more detailed analysis of the initial sales was provided courtesy of the developer’s investor relations Twitter page, as spotted by GamesIndustry.biz. According to the breakdown, 59% of the pre-orders were for the PC version of the game, and of those, 74% were digital. That means that total launch sales of Cyberpunk 2077 on PC clock in at 4.72 million, easily surpassing the 3.7 million that World of Warcraft’s newest expansion pulled in on its first day last month. And just to be clear, these are just the numbers for the pre-orders, not the copies sold once the game launched, so in all likelihood the final count on the PC version’s day one sales is much higher than 4.72 million.

It’s hardly a shock that the game is doing best on PC at the moment. For one, CD Projekt Red’s games have traditionally been geared towards the platform in particular, but more than that, Cyberpunk has been seen as a game that, for the time being, is best played on a PC. It utilizes some of the latest next-gen gaming technology, including ray-tracing, Nvidia DLSS, and Dolby Atmos, and since the next-gen console versions of Cyberpunk won’t be out until next year, this currently leaves PC the only available option for those who want to experience it on ultra-high settings.

The success the game has achieved so far does act as a double-edge sword to some degree, however. With so many people playing it now, a lot more attention is being paid to the game’s abundance of bugs and glitches, as well as its depictions of race and gender. The scrutiny that’s been directed towards these issues over the past week actually caused CD Projekt Red’s stock prices to drop in spite of the game’s record-breaking launch sales.

While it remains to be seen if those more questionable narrative decisions will ever be addressed, the technical issues are something that CD Projekt Red should be able to fix with enough time. And considering how successful Cyberpunk is just one day after launch, and how positive the reception is overall, chances are players will be willing to stick with it while it’s getting patched up.

Cyberpunk 2077 is available for PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One, with PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions coming in 2021.
