Emma Stone to Star in New Showtime Comedy Series ‘The Curse’

Emma Stone’s comedy chops are always solid, and it seems Showtime has come to realize that. The premium network has just added Stone to its roster for an upcoming unusual comedy series called The Curse. The show will be created by Nathan Fielder and Benny Safdie.

The show centers on a married couple trying to conceive a baby while starring on their own HGTV show, all the while dealing with a possible curse. It’s most likely as bizarre as it sounds, which seems to be right up the alley of everyone involved. Fielder and Stone will play the couple while Safdie takes on directing duties along with his brother Benny Safdie, the latter of whom will also star in the series.

This is no flash in the pan for Stone, as she’s been keeping herself busy recently with projects like 2020’s The Croods: A New Age and Disney’s upcoming prequel Cruella, in which she plays the devilishly over-the-top villain Cruella de Vil from the classic film 101 Dalmatians. Rumors are also floating about concerning her possible return as Gwen Stacy in the highly anticipated Spider-Man 3, but those are still only rumors.

Fielder is possibly best known for creating and starring in Comedy Central’s Nathan For You, a “docu-reality” comedy series in which he approached struggling companies and offered them increasingly unorthodox and eccentric strategies to improve their business. Most recently, he executive produced HBO‘s How To with John Wilson, which was just renewed for a second season. The Safdie brothers are perhaps best known for writing and directing 2019’s Uncut Gems. The film saw Adam Sandler in a surprising but very well-received dramatic role, earning the pair some much-deserved clout.

The concept behind this series seems absurd to the degree where the premise alone will likely be enough to draw in plenty of curious viewers. The ambiguous wording suggests the titular “curse” may not even be real, but that the show may not even make that clear to the audience, allowing for plenty of speculation and discussion. Stone and Fielder are both comedy veterans, so it will certainly be an interesting and entertaining experience to see them play off each other.

The series will be something to look forward to, at the very least. Hopefully, production is able to progress steadily and safely for the sake of those involved. They could always use some bizarre new ideas, and the weirder, the better.
