Flashy New Scarlet Nexus Trailer Revealed During The Game Awards

The Game Awards 2020 was a host to a multitude of new game announcements, while also providing a spotlight to previously announced titles. One such game was Bandai Namco’s upcoming “brain-punk” action JRPG Scarlet Nexus which got a brand new story trailer as well as an update on its release window.

Scarlet Nexus was revealed earlier this year in May at Microsoft’s Inside Xbox event. While it may have given an impression that it’s an Xbox exclusive title, it’s also coming to the PS4 and the PS5. Scarlet Nexus takes place in New Himuk, a Neo Tokyo city outrun by otherworldly creatures called simply the “Others,” that are brain-eating monsters in various shapes and sizes. The player character is one of the elite group of psychics, Yuito Sumeragi, who must eradicate these creatures with the help of a huge arsenal of psychokinesis abilities.

The latest trailer revealed at The Game Awards sheds more light on the game’s story and its dual protagonists, male and female, both of which provide different experiences but are part of the same story. It showcases the game’s fast and fluid combat that takes place in areas laid with cherry blossom trees and bustling metropolis. It also shows a glimpse of its wide array of characters, which are brain-linked via a technology called PsyNet, as they struggle to protect “the red strings” from the enemies and ultimately save the world from its untimely demise.

While Scarlet Nexus has an uncanny resemblance to Platinum Games’ Astral Chain that released a couple of years ago, it still manages to stand apart with unique gameplay and story elements, not to mention its upbeat punk music. It’s also interesting to note Bandai Namco’s partnership with Microsoft to bring this game on Xbox platforms, while also benefitting from the smart delivery system. Marketing such as these and the inclusion of other JRPG titles to Xbox Game Pass service such as the entirety of mainline Yakuza games and Dragon Quest 11, indicates how Microsoft and Xbox are willing to improve their stand in the Japanese gaming industry.

With Cyberpunk 2077 bringing a more western flair to the Cyberpunk universe, it’s exciting to see Scarlet Nexus’ brain-punk approach to the genre. As the player characters are interlinked with each other in the game via the PsyNet technology, it would be interesting to see how it tackles the theme of loneliness, which is vital to the game’s universe.

Scarlet Nexus is releasing summer 2021 for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
