To the surprise of many, Riot Games had something to share during The Game Awards 2020. It wasn’t a new game, however. Rather, it was a new trailer for Ruined King: A League of Legends Story. The trailer mixed animated cinematics with gameplay, serving as a character introduction to Ruined King‘s key party members. The trailer also teased Ruined King‘s villain, a character that hasn’t even been revealed in League of Legends.
Ruined King is an RPG, with players taking control of a party of League of Legends Champions on a mission to take eponymously named Ruined King of the Cursed Isles. The party of characters includes six League of Legends favorites. Ahri, Illaoi, Yasuo, Braum, Miss Fortune, and Pyke are the six potential party members, though it looks like combat will limit the party to just three characters. Each character looks like they have a range of abilities, most of which are taken straight from League of Legends.
Combat in Ruined King looks like it’s an interesting version of turn-based combat, rather than active action. Rather than each character taking a turn in order, however, there’s a timeline showing upcoming actions. An ability doesn’t push a character to the end of this timeline, but instead moves them just a specific distance along the timeline depending on the action. This makes certain character abilities faster than others, even if it’s still technically turn-based.
The reason why Ruined King‘s appearance during The Game Awards is so surprising is that Riot Games officially delayed the game prior to the show. It was originally planned for early 2021, but is now planned for later in the year. The timing of the trailer likely couldn’t be changed, but hopefully those interested in Ruined King will stay excited a little longer than they may have expected.
Ruined King: A League of Legends Story releases 2021 on PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
