While it was recently shared that the launch of the PlayStation 5 was the biggest in PlayStation history, it has since been confirmed that the console has beat out all previous video game platforms — not just those released by Sony. The previous holder of the “biggest console launch” title was the PlayStation 4, though the PS5’s launch has set a new standard for first month sales in both the units and dollars department.
The news was shared by NPD Director Mat Piscatella, ensuring that the news regarding the PS5’s launch being the biggest for a “video game hardware platform in U.S. history” is legitimate. Piscatella also highlighted that the Nintendo Switch is selling incredibly well despite the launch of new PlayStation and Xbox devices, as it still led the market in overall units sold. Still, the PlayStation 5’s dominant first month is a good sign for adopters of the new console, as Sony will surely do all it can to give the successful system some strong support.
With the PlayStation 5 doubling the sales of Xbox Series X in the U.S. and selling 7 times as much in Japan, there was clearly a massive level of interest in the latest Sony console. With PlayStation going all out for the launch of the system, displaying the Sacred Symbols in Sweden’s sky and holding a launch event at a Japanese Shrine, gamers everywhere seem to have gotten the message that the new console has arrived. As such, record-breaking launches for the PS5 in Spain have accompanied this news on the console’s US launch.
With the PS5 boasting major launch titles like Spider-Man: Miles Morales, which was the “3rd best-selling game of November” according to Piscatella, the PS5’s path to success becomes clear. Aside from numerous quality-of-life upgrades and an impressive amount of speed, the exclusive games available on the PlayStation 5 have pushed the platform to new heights. With the system being the “best-selling hardware platform in consumer spending,” the PS5’s games seem to be benefitting heavily from the system launch.
With the PlayStation 5 being updated consistently, the console should only become more enticing to potential buyers as time goes on, making for a likely continuation of this success for Sony and the PlayStation brand. If Sony can keep units of the popular new console in stock and meet the demand for the PS5, even more records may be broken soon.
