When Orphan Black star Tatiana Maslany makes her MCU debut in the Disney+ series She-Hulk, the Emmy Award-winning actress will be joined by familiar faces from the Hulk family. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige announced Tim Roth will reprise his role as Emil Blonsky in the series and Mark Ruffalo will make an appearance as well.
Until now, Roth’s sole appearance as Blonsky occurred in Marvel Studios’ The Incredible Hulk. This incarnation of Blonsky was a Russian-born British Royal Marine who longed for the glory days of his youth that had been lost on account of his aging body. As a member of General Thunderbolt Ross’ Hulkbuster unit, Blonsky volunteered to be injected with an incomplete version of the super-soldier serum that had granted Steve Rogers superhuman physical abilities. However, Blonsky’s lust for greater power eventually led to him being injected with Bruce Banner’s blood, a process that transformed him into the monstrous Abomination.
Feige announced Roth and Ruffalo, who first appeared as the Green Goliath in Marvel Studios’ The Avengers, will join Tatiana Maslany in She-Hulk during a presentation at Disney’s Investor Day. “It’s a series about a woman trying to navigate the world and be taken seriously as a working professional despite the fact that she is well over 6’7 and green,” Feige said of the Disney+ series. “Since Jennifer Walters is a lawyer who specialized in superhero oriented legal cases, you never know what Marvel characters are going to pop up from episode to episode.” Directors Kat Coiro and Anu Valia will helm the episodes of She-Hulk, which Feige also described as a “very funny series.”
She-Hulk was co-created by Stan Lee partly to ensure Marvel would own the rights to a female version of the Hulk before CBS’ The Incredible Hulk series introduced such a character. In the comics, attorney Jennifer Walters sustains a severe injury that requires her to receive an emergency blood transfusion from her cousin, Bruce Banner. Consequently, Walters is transformed into a large, powerful, and green version of herself who retains most of her normal personality but remains susceptible to bursts of anger that increase her strength.
Walters won’t be the only newcomer introduced to the Marvel Cinematic Universe through a Disney+ series. Markham-based actress Iman Vellani will star as Kamala Khan in the upcoming Ms. Marvel series before joining Brie Larson in Captain Marvel 2.
Feige’s promise of additional superheroes appearing in She-Hulk will likely raise the hopes of fans who wish to see Charlie Cox return as fellow attorney Matt Murdock, a.k.a. Daredevil. While Netflix canceled the Daredevil series after three seasons, the character is said to be joining the MCU films starting with Tom Holland’s Spider-Man 3.
She-Hulk will be released exclusively on Disney+.
