Ever since Joker from Persona 5 was announced at The Game Awards in 2018, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate fans have looked forward to the awards show in hopes of finding out who would be joining the all-star cast of fighters next. And although Minecraft’s Steve/Alex recently released as a DLC fighter back in October, another new character is already on the way.
Fan speculation has been all over the place as of late, with some hoping for Doom‘s Doomguy, Kingdom Hearts’ Sora, Fortnite‘s Jonesy, and even Master Chief from Halo. And while all of these characters are certainly qualified for a spot on Super Smash Bros. Ultimate‘s roster, it’s safe to say that fans are excited about the game’s next DLC character.
After Nintendo announced on Twitter just this morning that a new DLC fighter would be announced for the game tonight at The Game Awards 2020, the highly anticipated reveal kicked off the official start of the show. Sephiroth from Final Fantasy has been revealed as Super Smash Bros. Ultimate‘s next DLC fighter.
Sephiroth is shown off in one of the series’ most nail-biting character reveal trailers yet, accompanied by his iconic musical theme, “One-Winged Angel.” The character is depicted effortlessly destroying the game’s World of Light villain, Galeem, in a single blow, and shows the antagonist dueling with all-stars like Mario, Bayonetta, and of course, Cloud. Although the trailer doesn’t reveal many details, such as which music tracks will be included in Sephiroth’s challenger pack, the character is slated for a December 2020 release.
The new character joins the abundance of recent third-party additions to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, joining the ranks of Banjo and Kazooie, Dragon Quest‘s Hero, and Castlevania‘s Simon and Richter Belmont. While some may be disappointed that Sora from Kingdom Hearts was not revealed, despite trending on Twitter today, Sephiroth’s inclusion in the game makes Final Fantasy the first third-party series to have two completely unique characters in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, as Cloud was added to the series in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS.
Since his inclusion, Cloud has continued to be a fan favorite in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and seeing as “One-Winged Angel” is currently trending on Twitter, it’s clear that fans are pleased with the villain’s inclusion. With only a few more weeks left in December, it will be interesting to see when more details about Sephiroth’s release will be revealed.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is available on Nintendo Switch.
