At long last, the game that everyone has been talking about all year has finally arrived as players start their first playthroughs of Cyberpunk 2077. The game has released to a somewhat buggy start, but nevertheless players are already getting lost in the countless hours of story, side quests, and combat that the futuristic RPG has in store. One of the biggest pillars of Cyberpunk 2077 is the perk system that lets players customize exactly how they want to play their character. This game be reset, but it comes with some fine print.
Cyberpunk 2077 is highly customizable, letting players control everything from eating a meal during a dialogue option to choosing the appearance and gear for their Cyberpunk 2077 character. In addition to these are attributes that increase stats, skills that provide talents related to attributes, and perks that are either passive buffs or new abilities. These can be carefully selected and combined in order to create special builds that fit each player’s style. While some of these can be changed, others cannot and need to be carefully selected.
To respec in an RPG is to re-allocate points in order to try out new playstyles or builds. In Cyberpunk 2077, players can respec by using a Progression Shard called the Tabula E-Rasa, a clever play on Tabula Rasa—meaning a blank slate—and “erase.” This can be purchased at a ripperdoc for 100,000 eurodollars. The earliest ripperdocs–Viktor, Charles, and Robert–can be found in Watson. A respec in Cyberpunk 2077 costs an arm and a leg, but it also doesn’t grant players a completely new slate.
While players have three levels of customization in the form of attributes, skills, and perks, a respec will only restore player perk points. This means that the limbs of the skill tree, so to speak, can be rearranged while the tree itself remains the same. Cyberpunk 2077 players need to carefully select their attributes and skills as they play the game and learn what sort of playstyle they want to pursue.
The expensive cost of a respec also means that players can’t change their perks whenever they want to. In Cyberpunk 2077, 100,000 eurodollars is quite the sum. Unless the player is actively trying to squeeze money out of the game, 100,00 won’t be something they see until a few dozen hours in. This means that, while there is a small safety net for players to try something new, they should do some proper research about the game before jumping into it.
Aside from a costly respec system, many players are reporting early game-breaking issues with Cyberpunk 2077. It seems to be running much better on PC, but PS5 is already getting an update that should address some of the unplayable elements of the game. Unfortunately, it seems Cyberpunk 2077 players on Xbox will have to wait a bit longer. Luckily for Xbox players, the wait is perfect for researching perks and builds in order to avoid needing to respec at all.
Cyberpunk 2077 is available on PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One, with PS5 and Xbox Series X versions also in development.
