Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered Gets 60 FPS, Ray Tracing Options

Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales is the most popular PlayStation 5 exclusive game of the holiday season. Insomniac’s sequel to one of the most popular single-player games of the last generation continues its story enhanced by the PS5’s improved hardware. But Insomniac’s also offering the opportunity for those who missed Spider-Man on the PS4 to play it for the first time on PS5. Even better, Insomniac is improving the PS5 experience for Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered with new visual modes.

In a newly released patch, version 1.002, Insomniac has added a unique performance mode to Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered. It’s dubbed Performance RT and, as its name implies, it prioritizes improved performance for frame rates while also retaining its ray tracing visual features. In Performance RT mode Spider-Man Remastered players will see 60 FPS, a dynamic resolution, as well as ray tracing effects. It maintains performance while still offering a great visual pop.

Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered also offers two other visual modes for players to choose from, which were already available. Fidelity mode prioritizes visual features like ray tracing, dropping the frame rate target for the game to 30 FPS so that resolution can target 4K. Performance mode, like Performance RT, offers a dynamic resolution and a 60 FPS target. It’s just lacking the ray tracing feature found in the new Performance RT mode.

Some might be wondering just what’s different between the Performance and Performance RT modes. The answer isn’t entirely clear. The simple assumption would be that the dynamic scaling is what’s drawn upon in Performance RT mode to offer up ray tracing instead. As such, players may see better resolution in Performance mode over Performance RT mode. There may be other features lacking, too, and the difference in resolution isn’t immediately clear. It’s worth keeping in mind, though.

As for how ray tracing improves the Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered experience, the changes are somewhat limited. There are ray-traced reflections in the game in building windows and other locations. There is also ray-traced ambient occlusion, which deepens shadows in places where the lighting shouldn’t be as strong. In other words, ray tracing won’t significantly change the experience, but it should be exciting when it is noticeable and should make for a generally better experience even when unnoticed.

The Performance RT mode is already available in Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, for those curious. Insomniac is just bringing it to the remastered original game at a delayed pace. Players will likely appreciate having the option, regardless.

Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered is available now on PS5.
