Super Smash Bros Ultimate Adds Sephiroth to the Character Mural

Nintendo may not have taken home the Game of the Year title it was nominated for at The Game Awards, but the developer definitely stole the show with the reveal that Sephiroth would be joining the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate roster. While fans had expected other Square Enix characters to appear as the next fighter, like Kingdom Hearts‘ Sora, few were disappointed by who eventually was announced.

Now that the next DLC fighter has officially been announced, Nintendo is quickly making sure to fit Sephiroth firmly in place alongside the vast array of characters in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. This includes the key art that emphasizes the character’s design as it has been altered to fit seamlessly into the series’ art style, which is most notably shown in the game’s elaborate mural.

The mural has been a large part of Smash Ultimate‘s marketing for quite some time, so adding Final Fantasy 7‘s Sephiroth to the art piece is a substantial step in integrating the character into the game. Shared on the Nintendo of Europe Twitter account, Sephiroth can be seen taking his place next to Cloud, the protagonist from the same title that the new fighter is crossing over from. A short clip quickly closes in on an empty space just over Cloud’s shoulder, where Sephiroth is slotted in place between Samus Aran and a happy little Pichu.

The tweet mentions that Sephiroth has found “a cosy spot” by Cloud, which if any of the two characters’ interactions in the past might indicate, is about to get a bit heated. Some fans have been quick to reply to the tweet, pointing out how comical it is to see the somewhat more serious and realistically designed Sephiroth standing next to more cartoonish characters like Yoshi and Pikachu. However, with the way that the mural has been so painstakingly crafted to round off some of the edges of the clashing universes, the new Smash Ultimate fighter looks like he was always meant to fit into position right there.

This spot was obviously created for Sephiroth to fit so seamlessly into, as some fans have already pointed out by comparing the new image to the recent mural from when Steve from the Minecraft series was added to Smash Ultimate in October. Granted, the advanced level Tetris skills required to rework the mural every time a new fighter is added to the roster is nothing to scoff at. The artwork itself is a masterful piece that incorporates so many differently styled characters into one fluid shot, and Sephiroth now fits into it perfectly.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is available now for Switch.
