Amplitude Studios has built a solid following through the Steam platform thanks to games such as Endless Legend and Endless Space 2. Now it seems the company has decided to try their hands at consoles games with a new installment to its Endless Universe series titled Endless Dungeon.
The game was announced during the 2020 Game Awards last week with a new trailer that showcases some of the characters and visuals from the game. The title is meant to serve as a throwback to the developer’s first game, Dungeon of the Endless.
The idea for Endless Dungeon actually came to Amplitude Studios through its interaction with fans during a specific community event the company hosted, according to a recent PlayStation Blog post. The studio claims it learned a lot from the experience and thought it could make an incredible game based on the suggestions given to them.
At the community event, a small team of devs from Amplitude Studios built what was described as a prototype of “Roguelike Tower-Defense Dungeon Crawler.” The idea for this roguelike console game started off as a joke, according to the PlayStation Blog post, but fans quickly became passionate about the idea and built a following around it. Community members would share their favorite moments with the game, so Amplitude Studios decided to develop an entirely new experience that still holds onto the same spirit as its predecessor.
In Endless Dungeon, Amplitude Studios decided to keep the fans’ notes about the multiplayer experience and having direct control of action in an explorative wave-based defense game. Endless Dungeon continues the Endless Universe story with players stranded in a mysterious space station. Together, players have to solve the mystery of why they are trapped on the station and what is keeping them alive. Players can either jump in solo or join with a friend to explore the surrounding area, fend off waves of foes, and make their way to the core of the space station.
Hopefully, Amplitude Studios can successfully keep up the fan-driven momentum of the game. It seems the company is doing its best to give players the best version of Endless Dungeon it can. It will be interesting to see how the company tackles development for a different gaming system, as the game will be available on PlayStation consoles. In the end, it is a nice change of pace seeing a company give as much consideration to community feedback as Amplitude Studios seems to be, and bigger companies could take notes.
Endless Dungeon is currently in development for PS4 and PS5.
