Many Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War players have been vocal regarding their stance against skill-based matchmaking (SBMM), though discussion on the issue may heat up again due to a recent discovery. A group of Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War YouTubers have found that SBMM not only impacts the difficulty of matches, but may also affect connection quality.
YouTubers Drift0r, JGOD, TheXclusiveAce, and S0ur came together to conduct a study on SBMM. While players have had theories about SBMM in Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, nobody likely expected that the balancing system would negatively impact one’s connection. However, the group of content creators found that ping may be raised by nearly 50 percent if players demonstrate enough skill.
This statistic highlighted in Drift0r’s video may have players using Nadeshot’s strategy to avoid SBMM, as the hit to connection quality is severe if their findings are accurate. The issue is caused by a matchmaking algorithm that no longer prioritizes connection, with other parameters now being viewed as more integral to the player experience. This questionable system was not seen in Call of Duty’s prior balancing systems, and it sees players with higher scores per minute being potentially punished with laggier games.
This discovery regarding top-tier Call of Duty players lagging more often is not the only bad news found in their test, however, as it was discovered that the current SBMM system could place the highest skill players with a team full of low-skill teammates. With fewer highly skilled players available to match with, the system course corrects. Though the intention is to create balanced teams, the more common result is that the best Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War players will be forced to carry weaker teams — and potentially lose more matches doing so.
Aside from laggier matches and a more punishing experience for those who are good at the game, the YouTubers suggest that the current system is less of a skill-based matchmaking tool and more of a mechanic focused on player engagement. They say players will be placed into Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War lobbies that cycle between easy and difficult matches. Depending on player performance in a match, the next game will be harder or easier, changing constantly to keep players hooked.
While Treyarch confirmed that all Call of Duty games have SBMM some time ago, the studio also said that each system can be adjusted. Based on this study from the four popular Call of Duty YouTubers, Treyarch may need to keep that promise, as many players would like to see serious tweaks to SBMM soon.
Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
