Disney’s Secret Invasion Will Star Nick Fury in Ambitious Marvel Story

Despite lacking any superpower to match most of the Avengers’ might, Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury has gone on to be one of the most beloved characters in the MCU since he first appeared in Iron Man. For that reason, rumors of a possible Nick Fury standalone series have been circling for a while, especially after Captain Marvel gave Jackson more screen time than any other Marvel movie.

Thus, when Disney announced more Disney+ series that would add to the MCU’s Phase Four, it was no surprise to hear Jackson would star in his own Secret Invasion series. The new production is joined by Ironheart and Armor Wars (starring Don Cheadle as War Machine) as future Disney+ exclusives that will continue to bolster the service’s Marvel-based content.

The news was accompanied by confirmation that Jackson will be joined by his Captain Marvel co-star Ben Mendelsohn reprising his role as Talos the Skrull, fitting as Marvel Studios decides to bring the Secret Invasion storyline into the MCU. No official release date was shared by Disney with this announcement.

Captain Marvel and Spider-Man: Far From Home introduced the Skrulls’ shapeshifting abilities to MCU fans, and the latter’s post-credits scene proved how convincing Talos can be as practically anyone. However, it is worth noting that so far the MCU has only seen Talos and Soren, the good Skrulls, so Secret Invasion should add some villainous characters to the equation.

The Secret Invasion comics are famous for bringing out the worst in Marvel’s heroes after the shapeshifting Skrull covertly infiltrate planet Earth and even the Avengers themselves, sending them into a spiral of distrust and paranoia. One missing element from that crossover story in the MCU would be the Illuminati, a secret organization founded by the likes of Iron Man, Doctor Strange, Charles Xavier, Black Bolt, Mister Fantastic and Namor; out of which only Doctor Strange and Professor X currently exist in any form within the MCU following Tony Stark’s death in Avengers: Endgame.

The MCU has taken its fair share of creative licenses departing from the Marvel Comics to accommodate storylines, so the only thing that’s guaranteed for Secret Invasion is that there will be a Skrull invasion. Just how that might take place is a different story, and it could also be influenced by the events in Wandavision, which could tie into Nick Fury’s work in space seen at the end of Spider-Man: Far From Home.

Secret Invasion is currently in development for Disney+.
