Twitch streamer Lirik discovered a frustrating bug in Cyberpunk 2077‘s autosave system, which ultimately trapped his character in an exploding car with no easy way out, highlighting some of the game’s rough edges.
Cyberpunk 2077 offers an immersive role-playing experience in many ways, including vehicle ownership. V, the protagonist, can purchase cars from various NPCs throughout Night City. Depending on V’s physical strength, the player can even hijack NPC-driven vehicles. Of course, cars have durability as well, and as cars take damage, they fall apart and eventually explode. This instantly kills anyone inside or near the car, meaning players need to watch carefully for signs of an imminent explosion.
While streaming the game, Lirik’s in-game vehicle had sustained enough damage that it exploded, killing V and forcing Lirik to reload. Unfortunately, the game’s autosave system had saved Lirik’s game immediately before the explosion. This meant that once Lirik reloaded, the car exploded again. This resulted in a loop like something from Groundhog Day, as Lirik kept reloading to see if V could escape the car. Even when V did flee the car prior to the explosion, however, the blast radius still enveloped V, killing them. Lirik ultimately needed to load an earlier save to progress.
It’s no secret that Cyberpunk 2077 is a glitchy game. Some of these glitches are more amusing than anything else, such as a bug that covers Night City in miniature trees. However, many issues can stop players from progressing further in the game, such as the explosion loop that Lirik experienced. CD Projekt Red is clearly working very hard on fixing these glitches, given the huge patch released after launch.
By playing the game on PC, Lirik is using one of the best-optimized versions of the game. The game performs substantially worse on base model PlayStation 4 and Xbox One consoles. Performance is so poor, in fact, that Sony is offering an unusually generous refund policy. Running the game on a PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X seems to help substantially, but given that those consoles are in very short supply, this is not a viable option for many.
To be fair, Cyberpunk 2077 is a huge game packed with content, and some difficulties at launch are inevitable. Players who can tolerate a buggy experience will find a thoughtfully crafted world filled with amusing Easter eggs. The focus on branching storylines also promotes repeat playthroughs, which means that players have an incentive to stick around until most of the game’s bugs are fixed. Hopefully, this means that the experience of playing the game will get better and better over time, and that car explosions will eventually stop causing inescapable time loops.
Cyberpunk 2077 is available now on PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One, with PS5 and Xbox Series X versions coming in 2021.
