Among Us has been a force to be reckoned with on PC after exploding in popularity thanks to content creators on YouTube and Twitch. Now, Among Us is on Nintendo Switch following a surprise announcement at today’s Nintendo Indie World Showcase.
Among Us is one of the most popular online multiplayer games at the moment, so this is a big deal for Nintendo Switch owners. However, users will need to have a Nintendo Switch Online subscription to play Among Us with other players.
It seems natural that players would need to sign up for Nintendo’s online service to be able to play games online. However, Nintendo Switch Online costs $20 a year, whereas players on PC and mobile can purchase Among Us and play without any additional fees. While many free to-play-titles on Switch like Fortnite do not require a subscription to play online, Among Us does. This is most likely because Among Us is not a free-to-play title on Switch as on mobile, costing $5 on the Nintendo eShop.
For players who already pay for a Nintendo Switch Online subscription, this likely is not that much of an issue. However, those players who want to purchase Among Us on Switch and do not have a subscription essentially have to pay more the four times the normal amount to play with others. Luckily, Among Us players are getting crossplay functionality on the Nintendo Switch version, so they will be able to play with PC and mobile users. At the very least, players won’t have to worry about not being able to play Among Us with their friends on other platforms if they decide to buy the Switch version.
Among Us was undoubtedly one of the biggest announcements that came out of Nintendo’s Indie World Showcase today. Rumors that Among Us would be coming to consoles have been circulating for some time, but this announcement seemed to come out of nowhere. Considering Among Us is so popular right now, it was fitting that this announcement capped off the showcase. Still, the full showcase is worth a watch, with plenty of indie games getting some well-deserved screen time thanks to Nintendo.
InnerSloth, the development team behind Among Us, has been hard at work adding new content to the game. Recently, a brand-new Among Us map was revealed at The Game Awards 2020. The team also teased more announcements this month over on Twitter, which likely hinted at this new Nintendo Switch version. Players interested in getting Among Us on console for the first time should give this Switch version a shot, provided they are willing to pay for Nintendo Switch Online.
Among Us is available now on Mobile, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
