While 2020 has been full of twists and turns for gaming, perhaps one of the most unexpected surprises was the massive boom in popularity of the 2018 indie title Among Us. The online multiplayer social deduction game became so widely popular this year that it even took the top spot for the most searched game on Google in 2020.
Initially releasing on Android and iOS platforms in June of 2018 and then on PC a few months later, Among Us originally never caught the eyes of many gamers. However, with a sudden influx of content creators on Twitch and YouTube beginning to play the game this summer, many have become attached to the game’s addictive and thoughtful gameplay. As a result, it seems that indie developer InnerSloth is intent on making the popular game as accessible as possible.
During Nintendo’s latest Indie World livestream presentation earlier today, Among Us made a surprise appearance at the very end of the show. The hit Mafia-style game was announced to release on Nintendo Switch later today and is available now.
While it was not officially announced when Among Us would be available on the Nintendo eShop, the game is available for download now. The Nintendo Switch version of game has been confirmed to support cross-play with the PC and mobile versions, allowing for access to the game’s ever-growing player base. The Nintendo Switch eShop listing for Among Us shows that it will carry the same $5 price tag it does on PC, while the free mobile iOS and Android versions of Among Us are supported by ads. The game will also require a Nintendo Switch Online membership to play with others online. The surprise announcement was enough to get “Among Us on Switch” trending on Twitter just minutes after its reveal in Nintendo’s IndieWorld presentation this morning.
Although developer InnerSloth initially planned to release a sequel to the online multiplayer game, Among Us will continue to be supported with content that would have been added to the sequel, given its surprise popularity. Just last week at The Game Awards, InnerSloth revealed a new map for the game, featuring an expansive airship, set to release in early 2021.
It’s worth noting that this is the game’s first official release on console, which seems fitting given the Nintendo Switch’s hybrid handheld-home gaming nature. And while Innersloth has already shown off a new map for the game, it has also assured players that more surprises are on the way for the month of December.
