Another Justice Society of America has joined the ensemble of Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema’s Black Adam film. Trinkets star Quintessa Swindell has been cast as DC Comics character Maxine Hunkel, a.k.a. Cyclone, opposite Dwayne Johnson as the titular anti-hero.
Introduced in the pages of DC Comics’ Justice Society of America #1, Cyclone is the granddaughter of Abigail “Ma” Hunkel, the original Red Tornado and an honorary member of the Justice Society of America. Growing up, Maxine idolized many of her grandmother’s JSA allies and she couldn’t contain her excitement upon meeting her heroes after accepting an invitation to join the team during her teenage years. Bestowed with the ability to manipulate wind, Maxine takes on the name Cyclone to honor the Red Tornado and her former sidekicks, the Cyclone Kids.
Per The Hollywood Reporter, Swindell joins the cast as Cyclone alongside Sarah Shahi in an undisclosed supporting role. They join previously announced cast members Aldis Hodge as Hawkman and Noah Centineo as Atom Smasher. In a post on his official Twitter account, Johnson welcomed Swindell and confirmed production on Black Adam will begin in spring 2021. “A pleasure to officially welcome, Quintessa Swindell to our BLACK ADAM cast,” Johnson wrote. “They’ll be taking on the role of CYCLONE. Can’t wait to work with them and we ready to rumble in the DC jungle.”
During Warner Bros.’ DC FanDome event, Johnson confirmed the aforementioned Justice Society heroes will be joined by Doctor Fate. Production had initially been scheduled to begin in July 2020, with a release date set for December 2021. However, the COVID-19 pandemic forced the studio to postpone filming until the following year, and consequently, the theatrical release of Black Adam was pushed back.
Of course, many fans are curious to see what the larger plans are for Black Adam’s role in the DC Extended Universe. While nothing official has been announced at this time, Johnson has been teasing a potential meeting between Black Adam and Superman in the future.
Meanwhile, New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. are also developing a sequel to director David F. Sandberg’s Shazam! film. Officially titled Shazam! Fury of the Gods, the sequel will see Zachary Levu return to the role of Billy Batson adult superhero alter-ego.
