Chris Pine in Talks to Star in Dungeons and Dragons Movie

Chris Pine has commanded the U.S.S. Enterprise, fallen in love with an Amazonian warrior, and even briefly become one of several Spider-Men. But now he appears to be gearing up for another monumental project, as the Star Trek star is currently in negotiations to take part in an upcoming Dungeons & Dragons movie.

That’s right, the classic and enduring nerdy hobby that parents are contractually obligated to “never quite understand” is getting a full on cinematic adaptation, and Pine seems highly likely to be part of it. How exactly a game whose entire popularity revolves around the limitless amount of possibilities it presents can be faithfully brought to the big screen is unclear, but considering the talent involved, it’s certain to be a spectacle of one sort or another.

Pine himself isn’t the only draw for this film. John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, known for their 2018 dark comedy Game Night, are set to write and direct the project. Those who saw the 2018 flick starring Jason Bateman and Rachel McAdams will likely have high expectations for this, assuming the duo retains their penchant for bold twists and occasionally shocking humor. Daley and Goldstein reportedly plan to use an ensemble cast and portray the game in a subversive manner, which could indicate just that.

The Paramount-produced movie may end up being the first successful undertaking of its kind. Studios have tried to gain the rights to Hasbro and Wizards of the Coast’s Dungeons & Dragons franchise for many years, with this most recent attempt beginning in 2019. Three other films have been released under the Dungeons & Dragons name in 2000, 2005, and 2012, respectively. An animated series also aired from 1983-1985, though the films and series all largely fell short of acclaim.

The previous films played it straight with a generic fantasy setting, but the animated series took a meta approach with its 6 leads (all children or young teens) transported from the real world into a magical realm. It’s unclear what approach the new film will take, but given Daley and Goldstein’s history and plans for a “subversive” take on the property, odds are it won’t be played completely straight. Maybe something reminiscent of 2006’s Stranger Than Fiction, where some friends playing the game don’t realize their actions are having real effects somewhere else.

However the movie turns out, the people behind it are certainly enough to perk up a few ears, and there are bound to be more casting announcements between now and when they start shooting in Belfast during Q1 of 2021. So roll a dice and start speculating. 2 or higher means it’ll be fine. Nat 20 means it’ll be amazing. 1 means Pine will play Uni the Unicorn.
