Grand Theft Auto Online‘s newest update is out today and adds a new location, the private tropical island of Cayo Perico, and with it, new vehicles, weapons, social spaces to hang out in and a new heist which Rockstar promises will be the game’s biggest adventure yet.
With some players already checking out the new update, it’s been discovered that Rockstar has kept even more under wraps than first thought. Players have made a rather startling discovery that rapper Dr. Dre makes a cameo appearance on Cayo Perico and may even play a role in the aforementioned heist.
At the time of writing, it seems that he makes his appearance relatively early, arriving as part of a group of “big guns.” It’s also been noted that another rapper, DJ Pooh, appears alongside Dre as well, with Pooh himself sharing an in-game screenshot of the two of them in Grand Theft Auto Online.
It’s not yet known how big of a role these two will play in the heist, whether they’re key figures that provide missions or some level of assistance (maybe they’ll hang out with players on the new submarine hideout?) or if their appearances are relegated to the opening sections.
Despite how large this update seems to be, it’s unlikely to be a swansong for the game. With it still planned for a standalone PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S release in 2021, Rockstar no doubt intends to continue supporting it for a while.
While it’s still to early to tell, given the new update only came out today, some players who have grown dissatisfied with Grand Theft Auto Online may not be so easily won over. Twitch streamer Shroud, for example, considers it a flop and sounds more eager for the inevitable Grand Theft Auto 6 release.
Speaking of Grand Theft Auto 6, that game remains a complete mystery, especially since it hasn’t formally been announced yet by Rockstar. And with Grand Theft Auto 5 being re-released for the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S next year as well, it feels as if GTA 6 is still a very long way away.
So far, all fans have to go on are rumors and theories. Some believe that it could be the first game in the series to feature a female protagonist and one insider has claimed that, rather than be set in a whole new location, it will return to Vice City, the setting of Grand Theft Auto: Vice City.
Grand Theft Auto Online is available on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, with PS5 and Xbox Series X versions also in development.
