One of GTA Online’s many features is its variety of arcade games. Thanks to the efforts of a few dataminers, it seems that GTA Online may receive a new arcade game modeled after Manhunt, one of Rockstar’s classic releases.
The information was revealed by dataminer @GypsytheScumbag, who was reportedly the first to find assets for an unreleased arcade game hidden in the files of GTA Online’s latest update. They found and posted a model of a Manhunt themed arcade machine on Twitter. Shortly after, YouTuber TheNathanNS posted additional images of file names, placeholder assets, and the model of a revolver.
For players who may not remember, Manhunt was a stealth-based survival horror game developed by Rockstar and released for the PS2 in 2003. The game was controversial for its gory violence and depictions of gruesome executions. The Chicago Tribune even went as far as calling it “the most violent video game of all time.” But while Manhunt’s graphic violence scared away some, it earned the title a cult following that led to a sequel in 2007, though that game was more focused on psychological horror than stealth.
Unlike Doom Eternal’s in-game version of the original DOOM, it is unlikely that the arcade game in GTA Online will be a full port of Manhunt. The assets that have been revealed so far seem to suggest that it will instead take the form of an on-rails shooter.
While Manhunt never reached the widespread popularity that GTA and Red Dead Redemption have, it remains a classic in Rockstar’s catalog. Some fans still hope to see the title remastered for current-gen systems, while others have even expressed a desire for another sequel. Manhunt has already seen unofficial remasters with the help of modders, but Rockstar has never indicated that it plans on giving the 13-year-old title an official remaster. The original Manhunt is playable on the PS4 and PS5 through backward compatibility.
GTA Online is still riding the wave of its latest update: The Cayo Perico Heist. The update is the largest in GTA Online’s history, adding the new island location of Cayo Perico and a storyline that involves stealing from a drug lord with an army of armed guards. The update even includes a cameo appearance by Dr.Dre, as well as a 2.2 million GTA$ submarine that is required to access parts of the new island. Luckily for players, playing the Manhunt arcade game will undoubtedly be a lot cheaper.
GTA Online is available on PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One, with versions for the PS5 and Xbox One X/S in development.
