Newly announced Happy Game looks to invite players in with a charming welcome, and keep them locked in with a bizarre blend of disturbing and chaotic visuals.
One of the many reveals at today’s Nintendo Indie World showcase, Happy Game is a psychedelic horror adventure about a little boy having a terrible nightmare with the only way to escape being to dive deeper within.
Developed by Amanita Design, Happy Game will have players navigate some creepy environments and solve puzzles while trying to escape the clutches of terrifying pink bunnies and smiley faces with terrible agendas. Featuring a soundtrack by Czech band DVA, Happy Game will have 3 terrifying nightmares for players to overcome to help the boy get to safety.
Amanita Design is responsible for indie hits Machinarium, Creaks, and Chuchel. With Happy Game, Amanita Design is taking a slight departure from the typically happy, or humorous tone of the developer’s previous games. The overall design of the game seems to walk a fine line between a warm welcoming atmosphere that then trends to a more oppressive, even disturbing, nightmare.
Today’s Indie World Showcase seems to be the last one for 2020. Throughout the year Nintendo focused on smaller directs overall featuring indie games, 3rd party titles, and a few 1st party titles as well. The lack of E3 and impact of Covid-19 forced the company, along with several other game publishers and developers to drastically change reveal plans.
In the meantime it’s very possible that Nintendo will have a final full Nintendo Direct scheduled before the end of the year based on the company’s phrasing of the last Direct Mini Partner Showcase. While nothing has been confirmed, Nintendo could be ending 2020 on a high note.
Happy Game is scheduled to release in Spring 2021 for the Nintendo Switch and PC.
