Overwatch: Everything to Know About the Winter Wonderland 2020 Event

Overwatch fans can count on Blizzard to bring back the game’s major seasonal events around the same time each year. 2020 was no different, with Overwatch running all the usual seasonal events that fans have come to expect from the game. And now Overwatch is looking to bring its 2020 to a close by bringing back the annual Winter Wonderland event, which includes a variety of game modes, cosmetics, and more.

Blizzard has now pulled the curtain back on exactly what fans can expect from the Overwatch Winter Wonderland 2020 event. As usual, fans can look forward to some new skins to unlock for a variety of characters on the roster, plus there’s a brand new PvP game mode available as well, joining the other Winter Wonderland game modes that were featured in previous iterations of the event.

There is plenty for Overwatch fans to do during Winter Wonderland 2020, and here is everything fans need to know about the event.

The Overwatch Winter Wonderland 2020 event starts on Tuesday, December 15, and runs until Tuesday, January 5, 2021. This gives fans of Blizzard’s popular hero-shooter game three weeks to partake in the Winter Wonderland festivities, hopefully unlocking plenty of cosmetics along the way.

This year, the Overwatch Winter Wonderland event includes a brand new game mode for players to enjoy. Freezethaw Elimination is a 4v4 game mode, where the goal is to freeze all members of the opposite team at the same time. Players are frozen in Overwatch‘s Freezethaw Elimination mode when they take enough damage to kill them, but they can be thawed out by their teammates to rejoin the battle.

While most players will likely be trying out the new Freezethaw Elimination mode, it’s worth mentioning that limited-time modes from previous Overwatch Winter Wonderland years are returning for the new event as well. This includes Mei’s Snowball Offensive, Yeti Hunt, and Snowball Deathmatch, so if players are missing any of the achievements for those modes, now is the perfect time to try to get them.

Overwatch has been spicing up its seasonal events by including weekly rewards players can get by completing challenges in the game. As usual, players simply have to win nine matches in each week of the event if they want to unlock the rewards. A variety of Winter Wonderland rewards are available to those playing Overwatch during Winter Wonderland 2020, though the big draws will be the Elf Junkrat, Gingerbread Ana, and Frosty Roadhog Epic skins.

The Week 1 reward is Elf Junkrat:

The Week 2 reward is Gingerbread Ana:

And finally, the Week 3 reward is Frosty Roadhog:

Any Overwatch players wanting to add these skins to their collection will want to make sure to win at least nine matches each week during Winter Wonderland 2020, starting today, December 15, and until January 5.

The easiest skins to unlock during Overwatch‘s Winter Wonderland 2020 event will be the Elf Junkrat, Gingerbread Ana, and Frosty Roadhog skins that are being given out as the weekly rewards. However, players will also still be able to get plenty of skins from the special Winter Wonderland loot boxes, with five new legendary skins joining the lineup this year. Players can look forward to unlocking Conductor Reinhardt, Ice Empress Moira, Lumberjack Torbjorn, Penguin Mei, and Toybot Zenyatta. There will be three Epic-tier skins as well, not to mention plenty of player icons and sprays to unlock, too.

Ice Empress Moira:

Lumberjack Torbjorn:

Penguin Mei:

Toybot Zenyatta:

Similarly to the Overwatch Winter Wonderland limited-time game modes, all the cosmetics from previous years will be available while the event is live as well. Those that missed out on previous Overwatch Winter Wonderland skins can get their hands on them at a discounted price while the event is live. They will also have the chance to get these special Overwatch skins in loot boxes as well.

It’s quite possible that the Overwatch Winter Wonderland 2020 event is going to be the last big event for the game before the launch of Overwatch 2. Rumors indicate that Overwatch 2 will be launching spring 2021, with a beta possibly kicking off as early as February or March, depending on if one believes what the leakers say.

While it’s unclear exactly when the Overwatch 2 release date is, something fans can count on is seeing the game early next year. BlizzCon 2021 is scheduled to be a virtual event taking place from February 19 to 21, and it’s at that event where Overwatch 2 will almost certainly be featured. How extensively Overwatch 2 will be featured at BlizzCon 2021 has yet to be revealed, but it’s quite likely fans will get a much closer look at the game at that point.

Meanwhile, there may still be at least one more Overwatch seasonal event that will be featured in the base game before fans transition to Overwatch 2. And that’s the Lunar New Year event, which, like the Winter Wonderland event, typically features exclusive limited-time modes, cosmetics, and more. Typically the Lunar New Year Overwatch event starts at the end of January, so there should be plenty of content for fans of the game to look forward to these next couple of months.

Overwatch is out now for PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
